Overview
Jianshe (建设) is the brand of Chongqing Jianshe Vehicle System Co., Ltd. (重庆建设汽车系统股份有限公司), a large state-owned enterprise headquartered in Chongqing, China. Its roots trace to a military factory renamed State-Owned Jianshe Machine Tool Plant in 1957, and it became known to Chinese consumers through motorcycles: it entered the motorcycle industry in 1980, introduced Yamaha V80 technology in 1982, and formed Chongqing Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. in 1992. In 1994 it moved into automotive components by introducing Seiko Seiki automotive air-conditioning compressor technology, and in 1995 it listed B-shares on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange under the short name "建车B" (Jianshe B). Today the company positions itself as a domestic automotive thermal-management manufacturer. Its core products are rotary-vane compressors, swash-plate compressors and electric compressors, sold under the Jianshe brand to customers including PSA (France), Geely, Great Wall Motor, Changan Automobile, Dongfeng Nissan and Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën. The official site states that products sell well at home and abroad and that sales rank among the industry's leading positions. Cumulative compressor sales passed 10 million units in 2013, 20 million in 2018 and 30 million in 2024, according to the company's development timeline. The company is part of the China Changan Automobile Group orbit and is described on its own site as a large state-owned enterprise with total assets of RMB 1.38 billion, comprising one wholly owned subsidiary and two joint ventures. Its affiliate network has included Chongqing Jianshe Vehicle Air Conditioner Co., Ltd., Chongqing Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Pingshan Taikai Carburetor Co., Ltd. It operates technology platforms recognized by Chongqing municipality, including an enterprise technology center, a key laboratory for vehicle air-conditioning compressors and an automotive thermal-management engineering technology research center. Although the Jianshe name is historically associated with motorcycles and scooters, the listed company's current commercial identity is centered on automotive thermal management and compressor manufacturing, with motorcycle-related businesses largely organized through joint ventures such as Jianshe Yamaha.
History
Jianshe's history is rooted in China's military-industrial complex. The official development timeline records that the enterprise was renamed State-Owned Jianshe Machine Tool Plant (国营建设机床厂) in 1957. It received high-level attention in the Mao era: Mao Zedong inspected the enterprise in 1958 and Deng Xiaoping in 1965. In 1991, Jiang Zemin also visited the company. The modern consumer-facing chapter began in 1980, when Jianshe entered the motorcycle industry. In 1982 it introduced Yamaha's V80 motorcycle model from Japan, later renamed the CY80. A decade later, in 1992, Chongqing Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. was established, formalizing the motorcycle joint venture that made Jianshe a household name in Chinese two-wheelers. Further motorcycle-related expansion followed in 2004 with the establishment of Zhuzhou Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai Yamaha Jianshe Motorcycle Sales Co., Ltd. In 1994 the company diversified into automotive components by introducing Japanese Seiko Seiki automotive air-conditioning compressor technology. This proved to be the strategic pivot that defines the company today. In 1995 it listed B-shares on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange under the short name "建车B" (Jianshe B). Through the 2000s and 2010s the compressor business scaled rapidly. In 2009 annual compressor production and sales exceeded one million units. In 2010 the company entered PSA (France) global procurement system. In 2012 it implemented a 1.5-million-unit capacity expansion technical transformation for vehicle air-conditioning compressors, and in 2014 a 500,000-unit expansion brought capacity to two million units. Cumulative compressor sales surpassed 10 million units in 2013 and 20 million in 2018, the same year Chongqing Jianshe Hanon Automotive Thermal Management System Co., Ltd. was established. In 2020 the company completed the acquisition of equity in Pingshan Taikai. By 2024 cumulative vehicle air-conditioning compressor sales had exceeded 30 million units. Today the company describes itself as a large state-owned enterprise with total assets of RMB 1.38 billion, one wholly owned subsidiary and two joint ventures. Its affiliate and group members include Chongqing Jianshe Vehicle Air Conditioner Co., Ltd., Chongqing Jianshe Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. and Chongqing Pingshan Taikai Carburetor Co., Ltd., and it is linked to China Changan Automobile Group Co., Ltd. Its technology base includes a Chongqing-recognized enterprise technology center, a vehicle air-conditioning compressor key laboratory and an automotive thermal-management engineering technology research center. Its products are sold to PSA, Geely, Great Wall Motor, Changan Automobile, Dongfeng Nissan and Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën, among others.
