Overview
Jigawa State Polytechnic, Dutse (commonly branded JigPoly) is a state government higher education institution located in Dutse, Jigawa State, Nigeria. It was established in 2007, following the Federal Government's takeover of the former Hussaini Adamu Polytechnic at Kazaure, which was renamed Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic. The present institution was created by a law of the Jigawa State Government to provide a full-fledged polytechnic in the state, with three colleges: the College of Business and Management Studies (CBMS), the College of Engineering and Environmental Studies (CEES), and the College of Science and Technology (CST). The polytechnic positions itself as a foremost institution for science, technology and management education. Its stated mission is to promote technological advancement by providing a conducive environment for teaching and learning, and by fostering innovative, entrepreneurship-oriented and technologically relevant products and graduates who are self-reliant and useful to society. It also emphasises multidisciplinary research with state and national recognition. JigPoly offers academic programmes at several levels: Higher National Diploma (HND), National Diploma (ND), Nigerian Certificate of Technical Education (NCE TECH), Ordinary Diploma (OD), and various certificate programmes. Courses span fields such as environmental health, public administration, electrical and electronics, computer science, microbiology, business administration, statistics, quantity surveying, building technology, urban and regional planning, biochemistry, civil engineering, accountancy, science laboratory technology, architecture, welding and fabrication, mechanical engineering, physics electronics, and estate management. The institution states that its graduates are recognised by leading employers and academic institutions for their academic and moral qualities. As a state-owned institution, Jigawa State Polytechnic is funded and overseen by the Jigawa State Government, with academic regulation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). Its central administration is based in Dutse, and its current Rector is Aliyu Abdu Ibrahim. The polytechnic continues to expand its academic offerings and campus infrastructure, including an additional college established in 2021.
History
The roots of Jigawa State Polytechnic, Dutse lie in the creation of Jigawa State on August 27, 1991, when it was carved out of the old Kano State. In December 1992, the Jigawa State Polytechnic was established with its central administration at Kazaure. At that time, the polytechnic consisted of four colleges: the College of Business and Management Studies, Dutse; the College of Engineering and Technology, Kazaure; the College of Agriculture, Hadejia; and the College of Islamic and Legal Studies, Ringim. The State Government later renamed the polytechnic after the late Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Husaini Adamu. In 2005, the College of Islamic and Legal Studies, Ringim, gained autonomy, leaving the polytechnic with three colleges: the College of Business and Management Studies, Dutse; the College of Engineering and Technology, Kazaure; and the College of Agriculture, Hadejia. In 2007, the Federal Government took over the College of Engineering and Technology and the Central Administration at Kazaure, transforming them into Hussaini Adamu Federal Polytechnic. Consequently, the College of Agriculture, Hadejia, was granted autonomy as a monotechnic institution by the State Government, leaving the state with only the College of Business and Management Studies, Dutse. This situation fell short of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) requirements for a full-fledged polytechnic, which stipulate a science-art ratio of 70:30. In response, the Jigawa State Government enacted a law establishing the present Jigawa State Polytechnic, Dutse, with three colleges: the College of Business and Management Studies (CBMS), the College of Engineering and Environmental Studies (CEES), and the College of Science and Technology (CST). In 2021, the polytechnic established an additional college, further expanding its academic structure. The institution has since continued to operate from Dutse, offering a range of technical, scientific and management programmes and positioning itself as a key provider of higher technical education in Jigawa State.
