Overview
Jim's Formal Wear is a formalwear rental provider founded in 1964 in Trenton, Illinois, by Jim Davis. The company traces its origins to the Davis Family Clothing store founded by Leo Davis in 1922, which Jim Davis took over in 1954 and renamed Jim's Men's and Boys' Shop. In 1964, responding to customer demand for formalwear rentals, Jim opened Jim's Formal Wear and purchased 200 black coats, 200 white coats, 600 formal shirts, and a 900 square foot house near the men's store in downtown Trenton as a tuxedo distribution center. The company offers suit and tuxedo rentals and purchases, with a four-step process including style selection, event setup, digital measurement, and order delivery.
History
Jim's Formal Wear was founded in 1964 by Jim Davis in Trenton, Illinois. The business grew out of the Davis Family Clothing store, which was founded by Jim's father, Leo Davis, in 1922 in Trenton, Illinois, a small city outside of St. Louis. After Leo's death, Jim took over the store in 1954, renaming it Jim's Men's and Boys' Shop, and ran it with his brother Allen. In 1964, responding to customer demand for quality formalwear rentals, Jim opened Jim's Formal Wear. He purchased 200 black coats, 200 white coats, 600 formal shirts, and a 900 square foot house near the men's store in downtown Trenton as a tuxedo distribution center. Jim and his wife, Betty, took orders on a pad by the house's kitchen phone. The company's culture of hard work and dedication was established early, with family members taking orders, hemming sleeves and pants, assembling tuxedo orders, and delivering orders from the back of the family station wagon.
