Overview
JJ X-Ray is a Danish company based in Hørsholm that designs, manufactures, tests and commissions high-precision instrumentation for the analytical x-ray, synchrotron radiation, free-electron laser (FEL) and neutron research communities. The company was founded in 1995 by Jens Linderholm, then Chief Development Engineer at the Physics Department of the Risø National Laboratory, with the aim of building on instrumentation technology and know-how acquired there to develop innovative and reliable equipment for the x-ray and neutron industry. Its laboratory was initially located at the Center for Advanced Technology near Risø, giving the start-up close ties to Risø and the University of Copenhagen, where Linderholm established ongoing cooperation with Professor Jens Als-Nielsen and Professor Sine Larsen. License agreements were also entered with the ESRF to allow exclusive promotion of the ESRF slits, which remain in the product portfolio. The company describes itself as a smaller, agile Danish firm with highly educated and experienced employees, many holding Ph.D.s, and with few sharp boundaries between departments so that the customer stays in focus. It serves big-science facilities around the world, supplying both standard products and custom designs ranging from individual components to complete beamline solutions. Its mission is to provide the highest quality x-ray systems that ensure safety, reliability and efficiency for these facilities. JJ X-Ray's product range covers slit systems for x-rays and neutrons (individual blades, HV, UHV and air slits, coordinated blade slits, multi-pinhole apertures, custom slit solutions, white and pink beam slits), analyzers and spectrometers, attenuators, beam diagnostics such as beam viewers, collimators (radial, Soller and 3D-printed), control systems, diamond lenses and x-ray lenses, full beamlines, fixed masks, monochromators, mirror systems, reflective optics, CRLs and transfocators, refractive optics, positioning systems for x-rays and neutrons (linear motions, arc motions, rotations, sample and detector positioning, motion control systems), shutters and stoppers, and a range of named components such as the 3D printed collimator, 5-axis alignment stage, AT-C30-HV, AT-C8-HV, AT-F7-AIR, AT-F7-HV, attenuator, BIU beam imaging unit, Cividec UHV manipulator, compact white beam slit, custom-sized air and HV slits, diamond Laue monochromators, diamond lenses, double converging collimator, double crystal monochromators, end stations, the FXE beamline solution, girder system and gridded ion chamber. The company has undergone a generational change of ownership. In 2002 Karsten Joensen joined as Head of Technical Sales and Marketing to support increased activities and a growing product portfolio, strengthening interaction with specialized, quality-conscious customers and playing a key role in an employee-led generational change of ownership. Mechanical engineer Henning Bro Pedersen joined from the Central Workshop at the University of Copenhagen. In 2004 the first move in the desired generational change was taken as the SAXS business was transferred to a sister company, SAXSLab ApS, under the full ownership of Karsten Joensen. The change continued in 2005–2006 with the hiring of physicist Ph.D. Christian Mammen and culminated in an employee takeover, with Christian Mammen as CEO. Today JJ X-Ray remains a private Danish company focused on high-end instrumentation for big-science research facilities.
History
JJ X-Ray was founded in 1995 by Jens Linderholm, who was then Chief Development Engineer at the Physics Department of the Risø National Laboratory. The aim was to build on the instrumentation technology and know-how acquired there to develop innovative and reliable instrumentation for the x-ray and neutron industry. Locating JJ X-Ray's laboratory at the Center for Advanced Technology near Risø gave the start-up the full benefits of a close relationship with Risø and the University of Copenhagen. At the University of Copenhagen, Linderholm established ongoing cooperation with Professor Jens Als-Nielsen and Professor Sine Larsen. During this time, license agreements were also entered with the ESRF to allow the exclusive promotion of the ESRF slits, which are still in the product portfolio. In 2002 Karsten Joensen joined the company as Head of Technical Sales and Marketing to support JJ X-Ray's increased activities and growing product portfolio. His primary role was to strengthen the company's interaction with its very specialized and quality-conscious customers. He also played a key role in an employee-led generational change of ownership. The company was further strengthened by the employment of Mechanical Engineer Henning Bro Pedersen, who came from the Central Workshop at the University of Copenhagen. In 2004 the first move in a desired generational change of ownership was taken as the SAXS business was transferred to a sister company, SAXSLab ApS, under the full ownership of Karsten Joensen. The generational change continued in 2005–2006 with the newly hired physicist Ph.D. Christian Mammen, and culminated in an employee takeover, with Christian Mammen as CEO. The company's own About page notes that it was founded back in 1996, while the History page states 1995; the 1995 date is used here as the more detailed account. Today JJ X-Ray is a private Danish company based in Hørsholm. It designs, manufactures and sells extremely durable high-end solutions for high-precision instrumentation, targeting the analytical x-ray, synchrotron radiation, FEL and neutron research communities. It describes itself as a smaller, agile Danish company with highly educated and experienced employees, providing crucial expertise in its field. It serves customers with expert instrumentation assistance, whether they need standard solutions or custom designs, from smaller components to complete beamline solutions. Its mission is to provide the highest quality x-ray systems that ensure safety, reliability and efficiency for big science facilities around the world.
