History

Jo-Mei was officially founded as a GmbH in November 2009 by Cornelia Geppert and Boris Munser, who have been working together as a team in the games industry for 22 years. The studio has created projects of various scopes for clients such as Ubisoft, BMW, Volkswagen and the German Telekom. Its first video game production was KOYOTL, an online multiplayer dungeon crawler with round-based PvE and PvP elements, made in collaboration with the browser game publisher Upjers. In February 2013, the 3D browser game Brave little Beasties went into closed beta, and it was released on July 13, 2013. In July 2014, Jo-Mei received funding from Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg to create a prototype for its first independent full-price title and console game, Sea of Solitude. In November 2014, its last free-to-play game production, Monkey Bay, went into closed beta and went live in May 2015 on browser and mobile devices. In 2016, Jo-Mei started a collaboration with publisher Electronic Arts, which supported Sea of Solitude through its EA Originals program; the game was released on PS4, Xbox One and PC Origin in July 2019 and was nominated for several prizes and won several. In 2020, Jo-Mei began collaborating with developer and publisher Quantic Dream and developed Sea of Solitude: The Director's Cut exclusively for the Nintendo Switch, with Quantic Dream as publisher.
