Overview

John Fluevog Shoes is a Canadian shoe company. Its history traces to 1970, when John Fluevog, after returning to his hometown of Vancouver, partnered with former co-worker Peter Fox to open a shoe store in historic Gastown known as Fox and Fluevog. That partnership lasted over ten years before the two split amicably, after which John opened the first John Fluevog Shoes in downtown Vancouver. The brand describes itself as unconventional in style, and its product line includes styles such as the Amber Double-Strap Mary Janes and the Ocotillo pumps.

History

John Fluevog returned to his hometown of Vancouver after a summer hitchhiking down the west coast and began working for Sheppard's Shoes. In 1970, he joined forces with fellow co-worker Peter Fox to start their own shoe store in historic Gastown. The partnership, known as Fox and Fluevog, lasted over ten years, after which the two split amicably, leaving John to open the first John Fluevog Shoes in downtown Vancouver. The earliest Fox and Fluevog shoes were made from turn-of-the-century footwear discovered in a Mexican warehouse and purchased on the spot by John; the duo advertised them as "Brand new 50 year old shoes". One of John's first designs was The Pilgrim, a Victorian-inspired buckle T-strap loafer, a style described as completely against the mainstream of the time. Fox and Fluevog opened their first store in the heart of Gastown, Vancouver, and in 1973 the Granville Street store opened, eventually becoming one of the longest lasting Fox and Fluevog stores.
