History

In 1886, brothers Carl-August and Anton Seibel placed a punching machine in the barn next to their parents' house, founding the first Hauenstein shoe factory under the name C A Seibel. The first generation was led by Carl-August Seibel, and the second generation by Josef Seibel. In 1914, the First World War broke out, demand declined, and good leather was hard to obtain, making times hard for the shoe factory and for Josef Seibel, son of Carl-August. In the late 1920s the world economic crisis followed, and after that the Second World War began; Josef Seibel held his ground against all adversities and preserved his shoe factory, handing it over in good condition to his son, Josef junior, after the war. The company has developed shoes for over 140 years, and from a small visionary shoe manufactory it grew into a globally operating company whose shoes leave traces on all continents. Its passion remains rooted in its origin in Hauenstein, in the heart of the Palatinate Forest. The family business is represented in more than 40 countries with over 450 employees at six locations, and at its headquarters in Hauenstein it has been making shoes for over 130 years. In 2025, the 'Iconic' collection is still handmade in Hauenstein. According to its official US website, Josef Seibel has been designing shoes since 1886 and is family-owned since 1886.
