Overview
Joseph Vögele is a German road-construction machinery company headquartered in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Founded in Mannheim in 1836 by blacksmith Joseph Vögele, the company began as a railway supplier, making equipment such as switches, traversers, turntables and shunting installations. It later shifted its main focus to road construction and is now known principally for road pavers. The company’s range includes pavers for different kinds and scales of work, from smaller paths to roads, motorways and airport projects. Its offerings include the SUPER and VISION paver series, screeds, PowerFeeders that supply material to pavers, and digital solutions for road construction and paving operations. VÖGELE’s official site describes a range of around 40 paver models, 16 screeds and two material feeders, alongside digital solutions. It highlights the Dash 5 generation of pavers and systems for automated grade and slope control, automated machine control and digital jobsite documentation. VÖGELE serves customers internationally. It is part of the Wirtgen Group, which belongs to Deere & Company. Its history includes a long development from railway equipment manufacturing to specialization in road-building machinery; production and product development have also reflected changing construction needs and markets. The company presents its position around paving expertise, product breadth and solutions intended to support customer productivity and safer, more efficient paving work.
History
Joseph Vögele’s history began in Mannheim in 1836, when blacksmith Joseph Vögele founded the company. Its early business was connected to the railway industry. As rail networks grew, the company supplied equipment including switches, traversers, turntables and shunting installations. This early industrial role provided a foundation for the company’s later development as a machinery manufacturer. In 1925, the company began shifting its product focus toward road construction. It developed concrete paving trains, soil-mixing equipment and asphalt pavers. As road traffic increased, road-construction machinery became its most important business. Following the Second World War, Vögele took over Bosch’s lubrication-pump business. A plant built for this business in Hockenheim in 1960 was sold to Willy Vogel AG in 1999. A major ownership change took place in 1996, when the Wirtgen Group acquired a majority stake in Joseph Vögele AG. The remaining shareholders, who held 1.75 percent of the shares, were bought out through a squeeze-out in 2002, after which the company’s stock exchange listing ended. The company subsequently operated as part of the Wirtgen Group, which is part of Deere & Company. Product development continued to reflect different paving applications and markets. In 2004, production of the smallest paver in the range, previously moved to Slovenia, returned to Mannheim. The company’s paver range includes products for smaller paths, general road construction and large projects such as motorways and airports. The SUPER and VISION series serve different product and market needs, with VISION identified in the supplied German-language reference as intended especially for North American and Australian markets. VÖGELE’s later development has also included changes to machine operation, design and digital support. The 2012 “Strich 3” generation further developed the operating concept and brought fundamental design changes. The SUPER 1900-3 received an iF design award in 2013; earlier VÖGELE products had also received iF awards. The company is headquartered in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, following the relocation of the business from Mannheim-Neckarau to Ludwigshafen-Rheingönheim in 2010. Today, the company describes itself as a world market leader in road pavers and presents a broad international range of pavers, screeds, PowerFeeders and digital solutions, including its Dash 5 paver generation.
