Founded by Mariska Hargitay, who created it after learning about these issues through her role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and receiving thousands of letters and emails from survivors, the organization has carried out its mission since 2004. Its work centers on three key areas: Awareness and Community Building, Policy and Advocacy, and Healing Programs. Key initiatives include Heal the Healers, End the Backlog, and the Image-Based Abuse Initiative.
History
When Mariska Hargitay started playing Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, she learned the staggering statistics of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse in the United States. She also received thousands of letters and emails from survivors disclosing their stories of abuse, many for the first time. Recognizing that society's response to this violence was failing survivors, she created the Joyful Heart Foundation to address the need for connection, hope and healing and to offer a path from shame and isolation. Since 2004, Joyful Heart has been a leading national organization with a mission to transform society's response to sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse by building a world that prioritizes survivors' healing. The organization carries out its mission through programming centered on survivors' needs, focusing on three key areas: Awareness and Community Building, Policy and Advocacy, and Healing Programs.
