Overview
Juhl-Sørensen A/S is a Danish family-owned company that retails grand pianos, upright pianos and digital pianos. It was founded on 2 April 1895 in Aarhus and is among the oldest businesses in Denmark in its trade. Since 1959 it has been an authorised dealer of grand pianos and pianos from Steinway & Sons, and it now presents itself as the exclusive Steinway & Sons dealer in the Nordic region. Alongside Steinway & Sons, Juhl-Sørensen carries instruments from brands including Boston, Essex, Kawai, Yamaha, Pearl River, Roland, Casio, Korg, Hammond and Nord. Its range covers new grand pianos and uprights, used instruments, and rental or leasing options, with monthly rental listings for models such as the Yamaha U1A, Kawai K-300 ATX-4, Kawai GL-10 and Essex EGP-155. The company operates stores in Copenhagen, Brabrand (west of Aarhus), Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki. The two Danish stores are marketed under the Juhl-Sørensen name, while the three foreign stores are marketed as Steinway Piano Galleri. Historically the Copenhagen store was located in Bredgade and the Aarhus store by the city's town hall square; those exclusive addresses have since been given up, and the two Danish stores are now in cheaper locations — Copenhagen in a former industrial building in the Nordvest district, and the Jutland store in an industrial area of Brabrand. To reach the many children who take piano lessons at the country's music schools, Juhl-Sørensen regularly holds a so-called Steinway Piano Festival, a piano competition for children roughly aged 7 to 17. By taking part, children are introduced to both Juhl-Sørensen and Steinway & Sons. Juhl-Sørensen is owned by the Jutland brothers Morten and Michael Juhl-Sørensen. Morten Juhl-Sørensen owns 80% of the company and Michael Juhl-Sørensen the remaining 20%. Their ownership is organised through a corporate structure of three holding companies: Juhl-Sørensen is owned by the holding company Juhl-Sørensen Holding ApS, which is owned by the holding companies MOJS Holding ApS (80% stake) and MIJS Holding ApS (20% stake). MOJS Holding is owned by Morten Juhl-Sørensen, while MIJS Holding is owned by Michael Juhl-Sørensen.
History
Juhl-Sørensen was founded on 2 April 1895 in Aarhus, making it one of the oldest businesses in Denmark in its trade. For much of its history it operated from prestigious addresses: the Copenhagen store was located in Bredgade, and the Aarhus store stood by the city's town hall square. These exclusive locations were later given up, and the two Danish stores moved to cheaper premises — Copenhagen to a former industrial building in the Nordvest district, and the Jutland store to an industrial area in Brabrand, west of Aarhus. A defining moment came in 1959, when Juhl-Sørensen became an authorised dealer of grand pianos and pianos from Steinway & Sons. That relationship has since become central to the company's identity; it now describes itself as the exclusive Steinway & Sons dealer in the Nordic region. Over time the business broadened its range beyond Steinway to include Boston, Essex, Kawai, Yamaha, Pearl River, Roland, Casio, Korg, Hammond and Nord, and it added used instruments and rental or leasing options to its new-piano sales. International expansion brought stores in Stockholm, Oslo and Helsinki, which are marketed under the Steinway Piano Galleri name, while the two Danish stores continue to trade as Juhl-Sørensen. To build demand among young players, the company regularly stages the Steinway Piano Festival, a piano competition for children roughly aged 7 to 17, introducing participants to both Juhl-Sørensen and Steinway & Sons. The company remains family-owned. It is held by the Jutland brothers Morten and Michael Juhl-Sørensen, with Morten owning 80% and Michael 20%. Ownership is structured through three holding companies: Juhl-Sørensen Holding ApS owns the operating company and is itself owned by MOJS Holding ApS (80%) and MIJS Holding ApS (20%), which are owned by Morten and Michael Juhl-Sørensen respectively.
