Overview

Beltz Verlagsgruppe is a German publishing group whose programme areas include children's and young adult books, non-fiction and advice books, psychotherapy and psychology, pedagogy, and Juventa. Its history traces back to 1841, when Julius Beltz founded a book printing business in Langensalza, Thuringia. The group is headquartered in Weinheim, where its address is Werderstraße 10, 69469 Weinheim.

History

In 1841 Julius Beltz (1819–1892), then 22 years old, founded a book printing business in Langensalza in Thuringia, near Erfurt. In 1848, during the revolutionary year, a liberal weekly newspaper, 'Freiheit – dem deutschen Volk gewidmet', was published and was banned after a year by the censors as 'too democratic'. In 1849 Julius Beltz set up a school book shop for the Thuringian Teachers' Association. In 1868 the publishing house Adolph Büchting of Nordhausen was taken over, leading to the 'establishment of a publishing business' under the name Julius Beltz; a title list named textbooks for religion, geography, history and agriculture. In 1903 Julius Beltz (1880–1965), grandson of the founder, took over the company from his widowed mother Helene. From 1908 he traded as 'Pädagogischer Verlag und Hofbuchdrucker des Fürsten von Schwarzburg-Sondershausen'. In 1909, with the purchase of the journal 'Die Volksschule', a development began that made Julius Beltz a versatile school book publisher in the 1920s. In 1932 his son Wilhelm Beltz (1905–1975) joined the firm as a partner. The company, with over 300 employees in printing and publishing, was at its peak; the publishing programme comprised 16 journals and well over a thousand books, complete works and reading booklets. From August 2017 to March 2018 the Forschungsstelle NS-Pädagogik of the Goethe-Universität examined [the company's history during 1933 to 1946].
