Overview
Jura-Holding AG, headquartered in Aarau, Switzerland, is a Swiss building-materials group that goes to market as the JURA Materials-Gruppe. The group covers the full construction-materials value chain: extraction of raw materials, production of cement, aggregates, concrete and asphalt, as well as recycling and disposal of excavated material and construction waste, plus transport services. It employs around 800 people at more than 30 sites across Switzerland and also operates internationally through subsidiaries such as OPTERRA Wössingen GmbH in Germany. The company traces its origins to 1882, when Friedrich Rudolf Zurlinden founded the cement works "Zurlinden & Co." in the Scheibenschachen district of Aarau with five shaft kilns. It was converted into a joint-stock company in 1897 and renamed "Jura-Cement-Fabriken Aarau und Wildegg". From 1972 the company began acquiring firms in sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt and logistics, growing into a group, and in 1996 it introduced a holding structure. Since 2000 Jura-Holding has belonged to the Irish building-materials group CRH plc (Cement Roadstone Holding). Today the JURA Materials-Gruppe comprises numerous Swiss building-materials companies, including Aarebeton Aarau AG, Aarekies Aarau-Olten AG, BLH Belagswerk Hasle AG, BOW-Betonwerk Obwalden AG, Fr. Blaser AG, HASTAG (Zürich) AG, Iff AG, Mittelland Transport AG, PARINAG AG, Risi AG, Sand + Kies AG Luzern, Transportbeton AG Luzern and WABAG Kies AG. The group positions itself as a "Gesamtlösungsanbieterin für Baustoffe" — a total-solutions provider for building materials — combining Swiss quality with international know-how and promoting the circular economy. In July 2026 JURA Materials announced it would consolidate its forces under a single unified brand, merging central companies and uniting its business areas under one management. Its product brand Calterra®, associated with next-generation cement, received the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2026 and the Corporate Design Preis 2026 in the Corporate Design Launch category. JURA CEMENT is described as the first manufacturer in Switzerland to produce low-carbon cement based on reduced clinker content.
History
The company was founded in 1882 in the Scheibenschachen district of Aarau by Friedrich Rudolf Zurlinden as the cement works "Zurlinden & Co." with five shaft kilns. In 1891 it put a second cement plant into operation in Wildegg. In 1897 the company was converted into a joint-stock company and renamed "Jura-Cement-Fabriken Aarau und Wildegg". The production capacity of both plants was subsequently expanded step by step. In 1903 Jura-Cement-Fabriken AG took over the cement and lime works Fleiner & Co. Aarau and shut down its production. The Wildegg plant was expanded from 1927 to 1929 and the Aarau plant was closed. From 1972 the company began successively acquiring further firms in the fields of sand, gravel, concrete, asphalt and logistics, growing into a corporate group. This led to the introduction of a holding structure in 1996. Since 2000 Jura-Holding has been owned by the Irish building-materials group Cement Roadstone Holding (CRH plc). As of 2025 the JURA Materials-Gruppe comprises the following Swiss building-materials companies: Aarebeton Aarau AG; Aarekies Aarau-Olten AG; BLH Belagswerk Hasle AG; BOW-Betonwerk Obwalden AG; Fr. Blaser AG, Hasle; HASTAG (Zürich) AG; Iff AG; Mittelland Transport AG; PARINAG AG; Risi AG; Sand + Kies AG Luzern, in Horw; Transportbeton AG Luzern, in Horw; WABAG Kies AG. The group also operates internationally through OPTERRA Wössingen GmbH in Germany. In July 2026 JURA Materials announced it would consolidate its forces and appear under a single unified brand, merging central companies and uniting its business areas under one management. In August 2026 its product brand Calterra®, associated with next-generation cement, received the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2026 and the Corporate Design Preis 2026 in the Corporate Design Launch category. JURA CEMENT is described as the first manufacturer in Switzerland to produce low-carbon cement based on reduced clinker content.
