Overview

The Jury œcuménique de la bande dessinée (Ecumenical Jury for Comics) is a French non-profit association created on 6 December 1989. Its primary purpose is the promotion of bande dessinée (comics), chiefly through an annual prize awarded at the Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d'Angoulême. The prize has been given every year since 1990 and recognises a comic album published in the preceding year for its overall human and aesthetic values. The jury is composed mainly of critics, teachers and professors, comics professionals and enthusiasts, and includes Catholic, Protestant and agnostic members. The award was originally called the Prix regards chrétiens sur la bande dessinée from 1990 to 1992, and has been known as the Prix du jury œcuménique de la bande dessinée since 1993. In some years the jury also awards a special mention to an additional title. The association operates in France and maintains an official website at joedlbd.fr, where it publishes news about its annual prize and related events.
