Overview

K&S Gruppe is a family-owned German care and health group headquartered in Sottrum, Lower Saxony. Founded in 1981 by Hans-Georg Krantz as K&S Heim- und Betriebsgesellschaft, the company initially built and operated social real estate and shared accommodation before focusing on the construction and operation of nursing homes from the early 1990s. The name K&S stands for the founding Krantz family (K) and the social projects (S) the group has realised since its foundation, particularly through the construction and operation of social real estate. The group operates full- and part-time inpatient care facilities, senior residences, outpatient care services, day care centres and serviced senior apartments across Germany. According to its own website, K&S employs around 4,900 people, has 44 years of experience, operates 40 locations and 78 facilities. Wikipedia reports around 4,900 employees and 73 facilities nationwide, including 36 senior residences with roughly 4,450 full inpatient care places, nine outpatient care services and eight day care facilities. Services include long-term and short-term inpatient care for all care levels, care for people with dementia, palliative care and other special care forms. The group also runs a recognised training academy in Großtreben, Saxony, and has operated a student residence as part of its Zwickau care campus since 2017. K&S Gruppe remains in family hands, now with the second generation active: both sons of the founder, Ulrich Krantz and Georg Krantz, hold board or management positions. The group has been repeatedly recognised for employee satisfaction, including Great Place to Work participation since 2012, the audit berufundfamilie seal since 2014, and a kununu "Top Company" seal in 2026. In 2024 it ranked first for the fifth consecutive time in Avivre Consult GmbH's ranking of the 40 largest nursing home operators in Germany in the "Private Operators" category. The group also founded the non-profit association Corona e. V. in 1991 to support social and environmental projects.

History

K&S Gruppe was founded in 1981 by Hans-Georg Krantz as K&S Heim- und Betriebsgesellschaft, headquartered in Ottersberg, Germany. In its early years the company's portfolio comprised the construction and operation of social real estate and shared accommodation. In 1991 the group founded the non-profit association Corona e. V. for environment and people, which supports social institutions, church community donation campaigns and sports clubs in Germany, with the purpose of promoting youth welfare, elderly care, welfare and environmental projects. In 1994 the company moved its headquarters to Stuckenborstel. From the beginning of the 1990s, the group's focus shifted to the construction and operation of nursing care facilities. In 1998, K&S took over the insolvent Haus Renaissance in Torgau, Saxony, marking the start of its engagement in senior care and support. That house has since been repeatedly recognised, including as a Great Place to Work. In 2000, the subsidiary Elbe Baubetreuungs- und Betriebsgesellschaft mbH was founded out of the group's planning department, and the company moved to its current headquarters in Sottrum, Lower Saxony, into a new building planned and built by ELBE Bau. In 2005 the first outpatient care service of the K&S Gruppe was founded in Torgau, Saxony. In 2008, for the first time, four new K&S senior residences opened in a single year, in Nordhausen, Wilsdruff, Buxtehude and Kelkheim. In 2009 the K&S Akademie opened in Großtreben, Saxony, later recognised by the state of Saxony as an official training centre for care professions. In 2012 the group first participated in and was recognised in the nationwide Great Place to Work competition, with two to three senior residences taking part successfully each year since. In 2014 the first K&S day care opened in Erfurt, Thuringia, and the group has held the audit berufundfamilie quality seal since that year. In 2017 the Pflegecampus in Zwickau opened, the group's largest construction project to date, combining inpatient and outpatient services as well as apartments for seniors and students under one roof; a student residence has been part of the offering since then. The company has remained family-owned since its founding, and the second generation is now active: both sons of the founder, Ulrich Krantz and Georg Krantz, hold board or management positions. In 2023 the group launched the ELFIE Award, an internal employee award presented annually to recognise commitment, loyalty, professional competence, initiative and success. In 2024 K&S ranked first for the fifth consecutive time in Avivre Consult GmbH's ranking of the 40 largest nursing home operators in Germany in the "Private Operators" category. In September 2026 the group received the kununu "Top Company" seal based on employee reviews. As of its own website, K&S employs around 4,900 people, has 44 years of experience, 40 locations and 78 facilities; Wikipedia reports around 4,900 employees and 73 facilities, including 36 senior residences with roughly 4,450 full inpatient care places, nine outpatient care services and eight day care facilities, present in twelve federal states and 37 cities.
