Overview
K2 Geospatial is a Canadian software company specializing in geospatial information systems (GIS) and business intelligence. Founded in 1995 in Quebec City by Jacques Charron, a geomatician by training, the company was originally known as KHEOPS Technologies. Its mission is to democratize access to spatial information and analysis tools so that decision-makers at all levels can benefit from effective visual aids. The company is now headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, at 1440 Sainte-Catherine O., Bureau 905. K2 Geospatial's flagship technology is JMap, a mapping integration platform first released in 1999. JMap allows users to connect to virtually any system or data source without disrupting existing infrastructure, consolidating data that is often stored in silos and publishing it through a single platform. The solution is designed for executives, GIS analysts and non-technical users alike, enabling collaboration, analysis, decision-making and action in real time. JMap is available in three versions — JMap Pro, JMap Mobile and JMap Web — and supports French, English and Spanish. In February 2017 the company released JMap 7, a more powerful, robust and interoperable version of the platform. Beyond software, K2 Geospatial offers a full range of services including training, certification, custom consulting and development, technical support and managed administrative services. Its team combines expertise in geomatics, GIS implementation, business intelligence, software development and systems integration. The company serves a wide range of industries worldwide, including municipalities and regional administrations, public utilities, airports, ports, rail networks, natural resources, urban infrastructure, flood management, health and climate change. K2 Geospatial has built a strong user community around JMap. The City of Montreal became the first JMap client in 1999, and the City of Southampton (Long Island, New York) became the first international adopter three years later. The first JMap User Conference was held in 2003, and such conferences have continued for more than a decade, taking place in venues such as the Maison du Développement Durable and the Biosphere in Montreal and the École des mines in Paris. The company opened offices in the United States in 2013 to better serve its growing international clientele. Partners over the years have included PG Solutions, Carl Data Solutions, Arche Innovation, Consortech and Info-Excavation. K2 Geospatial remains a privately held, 100% Canadian company. Its stated values include audacity, performance, teamwork, commitment and satisfaction, and it describes itself as passionate about geospatial data — "lovers of points, lines and shapes" — with a focus on making spatial data accessible to as many people as possible.
History
K2 Geospatial was founded in 1995 in Quebec City by Jacques Charron, a geomatician who wanted to democratize access to spatial information and the technical processing of data. The company was originally named KHEOPS Technologies. In 1999, the first version of its JMap solution was released, allowing users to visualize and analyze their data and make better-informed decisions based on real geospatial data rather than assumptions. That same year, the City of Montreal became the first client of the JMap platform. Three years later, in 2002, the City of Southampton on Long Island, New York, adopted the mapping solution, marking JMap's first international application. As the user community grew, K2 Geospatial held the first JMap User Conference in 2003. The development of the mapping integration solution was initially carried out entirely by K2 Geospatial's own team. In 2006, the company concluded a partnership with PG Solutions. In 2013, given the diversification of its clients and partners and the growing number of JMap users, K2 Geospatial opened offices in the United States to respond more adequately to their needs. In February 2017, the company unveiled JMap 7, a new version of its technology described as more powerful, robust and interoperable, giving decision-makers, analysts and users additional tools to improve decision-making and act in real time. Since 2017, Carl Data Solutions, Arche Innovation, Consortech and Info-Excavation have joined the ranks of K2 Geospatial partners. JMap User Conferences have been held for more than ten years in diverse locations, including the Maison du Développement Durable and the Biosphere in Montreal and the École des mines in Paris, offering participants technical workshops and networking opportunities with the community of JMap users, administrators and developers. In 2020, K2 Geospatial and the Centre de recherche en informatique de Montréal (CRIM) were involved in a research collaboration. The company remains headquartered in Montreal and continues to develop and support the JMap platform for a global client base.
