Overview

K2 Pictures Inc. is a Japanese film production and distribution company headquartered in Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo. It was founded by Muneyuki Kii, a veteran producer who spent his career at Toei, where he worked in exhibition, distribution, planning and production, and was involved in titles such as 'Shin Evangelion: The Movie' and 'Shin Kamen Rider'. Kii left Toei in April 2023 and established K2 Pictures the same year; the company began operations on 1 August 2023 with capital of 541,142,000 yen (including capital reserve). The company's core business is the planning, production and distribution of feature films, both live-action and animation-related, as well as television and streaming drama. Its leadership team is largely composed of former Toei staff, including directors Daiki Koide, Takaaki Yuguchi and Daisuke Takahashi, who bring experience in production, publicity and distribution. K2 Pictures positions itself as a new-style film company that seeks to create a sustainable ecosystem for Japanese filmmaking, including through the launch of the K2P Film Fund I, a Japan-originated film production fund announced in May 2024. K2 Pictures has been active in international markets, holding a press conference at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May 2024 and having films selected for the Busan International Film Festival. Its production and distribution slate includes 'Magamagajo' (released 6 February 2026), 'Trophy' (10 July 2026), the live-action adaptation of 'Look Back' (11 September 2026), 'Shumei' (25 September 2026), and several upcoming titles through 2027 and beyond. It also produces television and streaming dramas, such as 'Onna no Ko ga Daichadame desu ka?' (2026) and the Netflix series 'Downtime' (from 17 September 2026). The company is privately held and operates from its Tokyo office. It maintains an official website and a presence on X (formerly Twitter) under the handle @K2P_PR.

History

K2 Pictures was founded in 2023 by Muneyuki Kii, a veteran of Toei Company. Kii joined Toei's film exhibition division and worked at theaters in Hiroshima and Osaka before being seconded to T-Joy, a cinema chain, where he helped launch multiplexes including T-Joy Oizumi (now T-Joy SEIBU Oizumi) and Hiroshima Wald 11, and later worked on the opening of Shinjuku Wald 9. He moved to T-Joy's entertainment division, where he was involved in exhibition, distribution, planning and production of films such as 'Haru to no Tabi' (2010), 'After School Midnighters' (2012), 'Saga no Gabai Baachan' (2006), '009 Re:Cyborg' (2012) and 'Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo' (2012). At Shinjuku Wald 9 he promoted anime programming and launched Japan's first live-viewing business, including 'Gekishine' for the theater company Shinkansen. He also pushed direct distribution in Asia and other overseas markets. In 2014, Kii transferred to Toei's film planning department. There he planned and produced live-action films including the 'Inunaki Village' horror series (from 2019, directed by Takashi Shimizu), the yakuza film series 'The Blood of Wolves' (2018, 2021, directed by Kazuya Shiraishi), 'First Love' (2020, directed by Takashi Miike, selected for Cannes Directors' Fortnight), 'A Bride for Rip Van Winkle' and 'Kyrie' (2016, 2023, directed by Shunji Iwai), and 'Revolver Lily' (2023, directed by Isao Yukisada). He was also distribution lead for 'Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time' (2021, directed by Hideaki Anno), contributing to its box office surpassing 10 billion yen, and planned and produced 'Shin Kamen Rider' (2023, directed by Hideaki Anno). In April 2023, he left Toei, where he had been head producer in the film planning department, and founded K2 Pictures to pursue a new form of film production. K2 Pictures began operations on 1 August 2023 with capital of 541,142,000 yen (including capital reserve). Its leadership team includes several former Toei colleagues. Daiki Koide studied under director Hirokazu Kore-eda at Waseda University, joined Toei in 2016 and worked in television production while planning and producing the feature 'Umibe no Kingyo' (directed by Sara Ogawa, nominated for the Jeonju Film Festival competition). He moved to the film division in 2019 and produced 'Shin Kamen Rider' in 2023. He left Toei in September 2023 and joined K2 Pictures in October 2023, where he produces works by directors such as Hirokazu Kore-eda and Miwa Nishikawa, as well as young directors including Nanako Hirose and Yuka Oki. He completed Talents Tokyo in 2024. Takaaki Yuguchi joined Toei in 2010, was assigned to the Kansai branch for three years handling publicity in the Kansai region, and moved to the film publicity department in 2013, working on over 20 films mainly in production publicity and TV/radio media. From 2018 he became a publicity producer on five films, including 'Kamen Rider Heisei Generations FOREVER' (2018, directed by Kyohei Yamaguchi), which recorded the highest box office in the winter Kamen Rider film series. He handled publicity for 'Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time' (2021), the first three-company joint distribution by Toho, Toei and Khara, contributing to its box office surpassing 10 billion yen. In 2023 he was publicity producer for 'Shin Kamen Rider'. He left Toei in October 2023 and joined K2 Pictures in November 2023. Daisuke Takahashi joined Toei in 2010 and was assigned to the film publicity department, handling publicity for 'Hayabusa: Harukanaru Kikan', 'Rikyu ni Tazuneyo' and 'Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods', then transferred to the Kansai branch, where he handled theater sales in major areas of Kansai and Chubu including Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Aichi, and was involved in overall film distribution. From 2018 he worked as a producer on 'Mienai Mokugekisha' (2019, directed by Junichi Mori), 'Inunaki Village' (2020, directed by Takashi Shimizu), 'Jukai Village' (2021, directed by Takashi Shimizu) and 'The Blood of Wolves LEVEL 2' (2021, directed by Kazuya Shiraishi). For 'Inunaki Village' he produced 'Inunaki Village: Horror Avoidance Version' to make the horror enjoyable for those who dislike horror, an innovative attempt. He also produced 'Ushikubi Village' (2022, directed by Takashi Shimizu). In May 2024, K2 Pictures announced the launch of 'K2P Film Fund I', a Japan-originated film production fund, with the aim of creating a new ecosystem for Japanese cinema.
