Overview

KAIL is a television station serving Fresno and the surrounding Central Valley in California. The station first signed on December 18, 1961, as an independent broadcaster on UHF channel 53. It was the first independent station to begin broadcasting in the Fresno market and has retained the KAIL call letters throughout its history, apart from a period when the station was off the air. Its studios are located on North 11th Street in northern Fresno, while its transmitter is in Meadow Lakes in rural northeastern Fresno County. During its early years, KAIL combined locally produced programming with a broad independent-station schedule. Its output included religious and public-affairs programs, older syndicated series, cartoons, classic films, selected sports, Spanish-language programming, and locally produced children's content such as Leebo the Clown. The station initially broadcast for only part of the day. Competition intensified after KMPH-TV began broadcasting in 1971 and KFTV launched as a full-time Spanish-language station in 1972. KAIL subsequently faced financial difficulties and ceased broadcasting on April 17, 1973. It returned to test transmissions in September 1976 and resumed regular programming on October 7 of that year. After its return, KAIL initially relied heavily on religious programming, including The 700 Club and TBN's Praise the Lord, supplemented by children's, public-affairs, movie, drama, and barter-syndicated programming. By the mid-1980s it had expanded to roughly 20 hours of daily broadcasting and gradually strengthened its syndicated lineup, although its audience performance remained modest compared with larger competitors. In the 1990s, it added more recent off-network sitcoms, talk shows, reality programs, and court shows. Cartoons were gradually reduced and disappeared from the weekday schedule in 2003 after the end of UPN's Disney's One Too children's block. KAIL became a charter UPN affiliate on January 16, 1995. When UPN was replaced by a broader restructuring of American broadcast networks, KAIL joined MyNetworkTV at that service's launch on September 5, 2006. The station also experimented with digital multicast programming. It carried Retro Television Network on digital subchannel 7.2 beginning in 2008, later replacing it with Cozi TV in 2013 and subsequently carrying Light TV in 2017, while other services moved among the station's multicast channels. KAIL introduced Mobile DTV service in February 2010 and transitioned its main signal from analog UHF channel 53 to digital VHF channel 7 on June 12, 2009. The station's ownership changed several times in the 2010s. Trans-America Broadcasting renamed itself Tel-America North Corporation in 2014. Tel-America agreed to sell KAIL to Aperio Communications in 2015 for a reported $3 million. In 2020, Aperio announced an agreement to sell the station to Total Christian Television, a Marion, Illinois-based religious broadcaster. The transaction closed on September 30, 2020. In connection with the sale, KAIL became a TCT-owned-and-operated station and adopted programming supplied by TCT's Christian television service. The MyNetworkTV affiliation and the associated intellectual property moved to KMSG-LD, separating the KAIL identity from its former commercial-network role. KAIL has also carried locally produced news under several arrangements. KSEE supplied a 10 p.m. newscast from 2006 to 2009, and KFSN-TV produced another weeknight 10 p.m. program for the station beginning in 2013. KFSN ended that arrangement in 2014 and resumed producing a one-hour weeknight 8 p.m. newscast for KAIL in 2018. Following its 2020 acquisition by TCT, KAIL's principal identity became that of a religious television station rather than a general-entertainment independent or commercial network affiliate.

History

The UHF channel 53 allocation in Fresno was initially associated with KBID-TV, which operated only briefly in 1954 before going off the air. KAIL eventually launched on December 18, 1961, becoming Fresno's first independent television station. It broadcast a mixed schedule of locally produced programs, religious shows, public-affairs content, cartoons, films, syndicated programs, sports, and Spanish-language material. One locally associated children's program was Leebo the Clown. The station originally operated for approximately eight hours per day. Competition grew in the early 1970s. KMPH-TV signed on in 1971 and became a stronger independent competitor, while KFTV's 1972 launch removed much of the Spanish-language programming that KAIL had carried. KAIL experienced financial problems and was still broadcasting in black and white when it went dark on April 17, 1973. Test transmissions resumed in September 1976, followed by a return to regular programming on October 7. The revived station initially emphasized religious programs, including The 700 Club and TBN's Praise the Lord, while also carrying children's programs, public affairs, inexpensive dramas, films, and barter-syndicated shows. During the 1980s, KAIL expanded its daily schedule to approximately 20 hours and added more syndicated entertainment, including cartoons. Although it remained behind better-funded competitors in audience strength, its lineup became more substantial. In the 1990s, it added off-network sitcoms, talk shows, reality programs, and court programming. KAIL became a charter UPN affiliate on January 16, 1995, but retained an independent-style schedule because UPN did not initially provide a full weekly slate. Cartoons were gradually phased out, disappearing from the weekday schedule in 2003 after UPN ended its children's programming block. In 2006, KAIL became a charter affiliate of MyNetworkTV, which was created in response to the restructuring of UPN and The WB. In 2008, it acquired rights to Fresno State Bulldogs events and also began carrying Retro Television Network on digital subchannel 7.2. That subchannel later carried San Francisco Giants broadcasts and changed from RTV to Cozi TV in 2013. Light TV was introduced on 7.2 in 2017, with Cozi moving to another multicast channel. KAIL began Mobile DTV broadcasts in February 2010. Its analog signal ended on June 12, 2009, while the station's digital service operated on VHF channel 7. Ownership and operating structure changed during the following decade. Trans-America Broadcasting adopted the name Tel-America North Corporation in 2014. Tel-America agreed to sell KAIL to Aperio Communications in 2015. Aperio later agreed to sell the station to Total Christian Television, and the transaction closed in September 2020. The sale excluded certain sales and programming contracts and the MyNetworkTV affiliation. KAIL then became a TCT-owned-and-operated station carrying Christian programming from TCT's satellite service; the KAIL intellectual property and MyNetworkTV affiliation moved to KMSG-LD. KAIL's local news history has primarily involved programming supplied by other Fresno broadcasters. KSEE produced a weeknight 10 p.m. newscast for the station from 2006 until 2009. KFSN-TV began another weeknight 10 p.m. newscast in 2013, ended it in 2014, and resumed a news arrangement in 2018 with a one-hour weeknight 8 p.m. program. The station's current identity is centered on religious broadcasting under Total Christian Television.
