Overview

Kaltura is a video technology and software company headquartered in New York, with roots in Israel and operations across major international markets. Founded in 2006 by Shay David, Ron Yekutiel, and Michal Tsur, the company developed around the idea that video should be a programmable, collaborative, and broadly accessible layer of digital communication rather than only a broadcast format. Its technology has been used for video management, publishing, live streaming, online learning, virtual meetings, webinars, digital events, internal communications, and television streaming. The company first gained visibility through an open and developer-oriented approach to online video. Kaltura launched publicly at the TechCrunch40 event in San Francisco in September 2007 after raising approximately $2.1 million from angel investors and Avalon Ventures. Early activity included a partnership with the New York Public Library to support rich media in digital collections and a collaboration with the Wikimedia Foundation to bring collaborative video functionality to Wikipedia and other MediaWiki sites. Kaltura also supported open-video initiatives, including the Open Video Alliance, and sponsored development work intended to make video editing and multimedia contribution more integrated with wiki software. Over time, Kaltura shifted from an open-video and media infrastructure emphasis toward a broad business-to-business software platform. Its core online video platform provides capabilities for ingesting, storing, organizing, searching, editing, publishing, distributing, and monetizing video. Around that platform, the company developed use-case-specific products for enterprises, educational institutions, media organizations, and service providers. Enterprise customers can use Kaltura for internal communications, employee training, knowledge sharing, marketing, town halls, live broadcasts, and video portals. Educational customers can use it for lecture capture, course media, virtual classrooms, learning management integrations, and institution-wide video libraries. Media and telecommunications customers can use Kaltura software to operate over-the-top streaming services, cloud television products, and related subscriber experiences. Partnerships and acquisitions expanded the company's scope. In 2011, Kaltura partnered with Blackboard to integrate media capabilities into Blackboard Learn, strengthening its position in educational technology. In 2014, it acquired Tvinci, adding pay-TV and over-the-top video capabilities. In 2020, it acquired Newrow, an online collaboration and meeting platform, and used that technology to connect real-time communication with video asset management, webcasting, and live production. Kaltura also worked with technology and media partners on cloud television and streaming solutions. Kaltura became a publicly traded company in July 2021 through an initial public offering on Nasdaq under the symbol KLTR. The company reported approximately $132 million in revenue in the twelve months preceding the offering, while the IPO was described as raising approximately $150 million. In 2022, it formally launched Kaltura Events, a virtual-events product covering event creation, management, automation, and performance analytics. From 2023 onward, Kaltura increasingly incorporated generative artificial intelligence into its digital-experience products, including content discovery, search, interactivity, and analytics. In 2024, it announced Class Genie, an AI-powered learning agent designed to personalize educational experiences using an institution's trusted knowledge base, and presented generative-AI capabilities for streaming services at IBC 2024. Kaltura's current positioning is as an enterprise video experience and communications platform rather than a consumer social-video service. Its principal differentiation is the combination of video management, live and on-demand delivery, collaboration, learning, events, analytics, APIs, and workflow integrations within a single cloud-oriented product family. The company serves organizations in education, business, media, telecommunications, and government-related environments, with offices reported in the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.

History

Kaltura was founded in Israel in 2006 by Shay David, Ron Yekutiel, and Michal Tsur. The company initially pursued an open and collaborative model for online video, seeking to make rich media easier to create, edit, publish, and incorporate into digital communities. It received approximately $2.1 million in early funding from angel investors and Avalon Ventures before launching publicly at TechCrunch40 in San Francisco in September 2007. Its early institutional work included a 2007 partnership with the New York Public Library on rich media for digital collections. In January 2008, Kaltura and the Wikimedia Foundation announced a collaboration focused on adding video and other rich media to Wikipedia and MediaWiki websites. The proposed technology enabled wiki users to contribute and edit multimedia elements in a collaborative manner analogous to editing text. Kaltura supported Wikimania 2008 and sponsored development work on an open-source video-editing solution for MediaWiki. It also became associated with the Open Video Alliance, which promoted open standards and broader participation in web video. Kaltura subsequently developed into a business-to-business video software provider. Its online video platform became the foundation for video ingestion, storage, management, publishing, distribution, monetization, analytics, and API-based integration. The company created applications for enterprise communications, employee learning, training, marketing, knowledge sharing, and collaboration; for higher education and schools, including virtual classrooms and learning-management integrations; and for media and telecommunications providers operating streaming and television services. Education became an important market. Kaltura's reported customers and users included institutions such as Harvard, Yale, and New York University, while its enterprise and media references included organizations such as Oracle, SAP, Intel, Bank of America, AT&T, Vodafone, Watch Brasil, and Bouygues Telecom. In 2011, Kaltura and Blackboard announced an integration intended to bring Kaltura media capabilities into Blackboard Learn. The company broadened its technology portfolio through acquisitions and partnerships. In 2014 it purchased Tvinci, a pay-TV technology provider, to add over-the-top television capabilities. In 2016 it announced a $50 million investment from Goldman Sachs and worked with partners including Inception, 24i Media, Encompass, and Harmonic on OTT experiences. In 2019, Kaltura reported exceeding $100 million in annual recurring revenue. It also announced work with Dativa in 2019 to develop cloud television around a dedicated data lake. In early 2020, Kaltura acquired Newrow, a collaborative online-meeting platform. The transaction supported a strategy of bringing synchronous communication together with video asset management, live broadcast, webcast, and related production functions. This positioned Kaltura to serve organizations needing a unified set of tools for recorded, live, and interactive video. Kaltura went public in July 2021, listing on Nasdaq under KLTR. The offering was described as raising approximately $150 million, and the company had reported approximately $132 million in revenue for the twelve months before the IPO. In May 2022, Kaltura formally launched Kaltura Events, adding a dedicated virtual-events product with event creation, management, automation, and analytics. Beginning in 2023, Kaltura increased its use of generative artificial intelligence across digital-experience products. The stated areas of application included content enrichment, search and discovery, interactive experiences, and analytics. In 2024, the company announced Class Genie, an AI-powered agent intended to create more individualized learning experiences from student preferences, engagement patterns, and prior interactions while drawing on an institution's trusted knowledge base. At IBC 2024, Kaltura also presented generative-AI capabilities aimed at helping streaming services produce and manage content more efficiently. Kaltura now operates as a cloud software company serving enterprise, education, media, and telecommunications customers. Its business spans video portals, enterprise video management, live streaming, webinars, virtual events, virtual classrooms, collaboration, OTT and cloud television, analytics, and AI-assisted video and learning workflows. Although founded in Israel, it is headquartered in New York and maintains offices in the United States, Israel, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.
