Overview

Kinderhilfe Bethlehem is a Swiss charitable organization whose work is closely tied to the Caritas Baby Hospital in Bethlehem. Its website presents its mission, history, governance, and fundraising activities, and lists contact details in Lucerne, Switzerland. The organization's history page traces the founding of the Caritas Baby Hospital and Kinderhilfe Bethlehem to events of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians became refugees, and to the 1949 journey of Swiss Caritas worker Hedwig Vetter to Bethlehem, where she set up a baby clinic together with Palestinian doctor Dr. Antoine Dabdoub. In 1952, Father Ernst Schnydrig of Swiss Caritas was tasked with assessing the situation of Palestinian refugees and met Hedwig Vetter in Bethlehem.

History

According to the organization's history page, the founding of the Caritas Baby Hospital and Kinderhilfe Bethlehem goes back to the events of 1948, when hundreds of thousands of Palestinians became refugees and displaced persons and lived in great poverty in tents. Hedwig Vetter, a staff member of Swiss Caritas, traveled to Bethlehem in 1949, where she was confronted with the distress of the Palestinian population. Together with the Palestinian doctor Dr. Antoine Dabdoub, she set up a clinic for babies, laying the basis for the Caritas Baby Hospital. In 1952, Father Ernst Schnydrig of Swiss Caritas was tasked with forming a picture of the situation of Palestinian refugees on the ground. In Bethlehem he met Hedwig Vetter. For both it was clear that as Christians they wanted to help the people in the birthplace of Jesus. Back in Europe, Schnydrig entered the service of the German Caritas Association and from then on advocated in Switzerland and Germany.
