Overview
King Prajadhipok's Institute (สถาบันพระปกเกล้า) is a Thai institution whose stated mission is to be a thought leader and to disseminate and develop democracy, good governance, and peace methods. Its activities include research and books, a museum dedicated to King Prajadhipok, educational training programs, and a library providing information resources on politics, administration, peace methods, and good governance.
History
According to the institute's history page, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of King Prajadhipok on 8 November 1993, Professor Marut Bunnag, then President of the National Assembly, appointed a committee to study the feasibility of establishing a democracy development institute in honor of King Prajadhipok. Eventually "King Prajadhipok's Institute" was established, having received royal permission from the King to use King Prajadhipok's name and the English name "King Prajadhipok's Institute," with the Institute Committee and the Academic Committee overseeing it. Later, on 6 June 1997, Wanmuhamadnoor Matha, then President of the National Assembly, appointed a committee to draft the King Prajadhipok's Institute Act; the draft passed the House of Representatives on 15 July 1998 as amended by the Senate and was signed into law in the Royal Gazette on 4 September 1998, giving the Institute legal personality under the supervision of the President of the National Assembly from 5 September 1998 onward. Wanmuhamadnoor Matha was the first President of the Institute Council, and Professor Dr. Borwornsak Uwanno was the first Secretary-General (5 January 1999 – 4 January 2003). Professor Noranit Setabutr served as the second Secretary-General (5 February 2003 – 15 November 2006), and on 22 December 2006 Professor Dr. Borwornsak Uwanno again took the position of Secretary-General (22 December 2006 – 19 December 2014). Professor Wuthisarn Tanchai served as the third Secretary-General (22 December 2014 – 21 December ...).
