Overview

Ofer Kiryon (Hebrew: הקריון, branded Ofer Kiryon since 2014) is a large shopping and mixed-use complex located in Kiryat Bialik, in the Krayot region of northern Israel, near the Acre–Haifa road (Route 4). The name "Kiryon" is likely a portmanteau of the Hebrew words "Krayot" (or "Kiryat") and "Kanyon" (mall). The center was built on the ruins of the Ata textile factory and opened to the public on 28 February 1989. Over the decades it has expanded significantly: from about 42,000 square meters of commercial space in early 2009, to 48,727 square meters by the end of 2012, and to 65,000 square meters by 2023. In 2016 a pedestrian-street-style cluster of shops and restaurants was added. By 2024 the entire complex spans roughly 120,000 square meters and houses about 200 businesses. An estimate from late 2009 suggested more than 30,000 daily visitors. The complex includes the shopping mall itself, the adjacent "Kiryon Towers" office buildings, and the "Bialik City" high-rise. The Kiryon Towers host, among other tenants, the Zevulun Medical Center, the largest Clalit Health Services center in the north. Opposite the towers, Bialik City contains a large Shufersal supermarket, a gym, a bowling alley, two bank branches, and offices. In total, the office rental space amounts to about 35,000 square meters. The Kiryat Bialik Magistrate's Court is also nearby. Ownership of the entire Kiryon complex, including the adjacent towers and Bialik City, belongs to Melisron Ltd. In mid-2010 the Kiryon logo was changed to reflect its status as part of the Ofer Malls group owned by Melisron. In March 2014 all Ofer Malls underwent rebranding, adding the word "Ofer" before the existing name; thus "HaKiryon" became "Ofer Kiryon." In April 2009, valuations of Israeli shopping centers held by public companies were examined. Based on 2008 data, the Kiryon was found to be the highest-value mall in the country, generating monthly rent of 10 million new shekels for its owners. As of the end of 2012, the average occupancy rate was 99% and the total value of the shopping center was estimated at 1.6 billion shekels. The mall's CEO is Guy Keren. In Israeli culture, the Kiryon appears in the Israeli version of the series "Married... with Children" ("Nisuin Plus"), where the shoe store of Shuki Avrahami (played by Lior Ashkenazi) is located in the Kiryon, and it is the favorite hangout of his wife Mali (Dorit Bar-Or).

History

The Kiryon shopping center was established on the ruins of the Ata textile factory and opened to the public on 28 February 1989. It is located in Kiryat Bialik, within the Krayot region, near the Acre–Haifa road (Route 4). The name "Kiryon" is likely a combination of the Hebrew words "Krayot" (or "Kiryat") and "Kanyon" (mall). In early 2009, the commercial area of the shopping center stood at 42,000 square meters and included businesses in clothing, food, computing products, and more. Since then, construction and expansion took place, so that by the end of 2012 it reached 48,727 square meters, and by 2023 it reached 65,000 square meters of commercial space. This followed the addition in 2016 of a pedestrian-street-style cluster of shops and restaurants. By 2024, the total area of the complex spans about 120,000 square meters and houses about 200 different businesses. According to an estimate from late 2009, more than 30,000 people visited the place daily at that time. In 2007, after being moved to a new area in the mall, the cinema complex that operated there reopened and was branded as "Globus Max" and later as "Hot Cinema." Until the late 2010s, the venue also included an IMAX cinema, which screened 3D films. Adjacent to the shopping center are the "Kiryon Towers." These two office towers house, among other things, the "Zevulun Medical Center," the largest center of Clalit Health Services in the north. Opposite the towers is "Bialik City," a multi-story building containing a large Shufersal supermarket, a gym, a bowling alley, two bank branches, and offices. In total, this represents about 35,000 square meters of office rental space. Nearby is the Kiryat Bialik Magistrate's Court. Ownership of the entire Kiryon complex, including the adjacent towers and Bialik City, belongs to Melisron Ltd. In mid-2010, the Kiryon logo was changed to one expressing its status as part of the "Ofer Malls" group owned by Melisron Ltd. In March 2014, all "Ofer Malls" underwent rebranding and their names were changed so that the word "Ofer" was added before the existing name. In this way, "HaKiryon" became "Ofer Kiryon." In April 2009, valuations of shopping centers in Israel held by public companies were examined. This examination, based on 2008 data, revealed that the Kiryon was the highest-value mall in the country, generating monthly rent of 10 million new shekels for its owners. As of the end of 2012, the average occupancy rate of its stores stood at 99% and the total value of the shopping center was estimated at 1.6 billion shekels. The CEO of the Kiryon is Guy Keren. In Israeli culture, in the Israeli version of "Married... with Children," the shoe store of Shuki Avrahami (Lior Ashkenazi) is located in the Kiryon, and it is the favorite entertainment place of his wife Mali (Dorit Bar-Or).
