Overview
Kite is a European brand that designs and sells backpacks for preschoolers, schoolchildren, and teenagers, along with stationery and accessories for study and leisure. Founded in 2007, the brand has grown from a local backpack manufacturer into an international operation with products sold in 16 countries. Its catalog spans backpacks, school bags, pencil cases, stationery, notebooks, bottles, lunchboxes, thermoses, cups, lamps, and homeware. The brand is known for its orthopedic school backpacks and for licensed collections featuring characters from Disney, Harry Potter, Hello Kitty, Naruto, and others. The company operates through a distributed structure: an office in Germany handles product certification and quality control; the Ukrainian office is responsible for product development, design, adaptation to different markets, marketing, and brand development; a representative office and warehouse in Poland support delivery to EU countries and adaptation to the Polish market. Manufacturing is located in Southeast Asia. Kite's mission includes a social component focused on improving mental health among children and adolescents in Ukraine and around the world. Kite's product range includes more than 190 backpack models, from preschool backpacks to orthopedic school backpacks and urban and sports backpacks for young people. The brand has introduced innovations such as the AGS (Anti Gravity System) backpacks with a floating back panel and FIDLOCK magnetic closures. It has also pursued licensed collaborations with major entertainment properties and run promotional campaigns with Ukrainian artists and reality shows. The brand has received recognition including the 'Choice of the Year 2021' award in the 'Backpacks and School Bags of the Year' category and a Ukrainian People's Award for 'Best Backpack of the Year'.
History
Kite was founded in 2007, when the first capsule collection of textiles was released: teenage backpacks and pencil cases in a single design. In 2008, the first collection line of Wonderkite backpacks for primary school and Kite&More business backpacks was launched, along with the first stationery sets and creative kits. In 2010, the company developed and released capsule licensed collections of backpacks, pencil cases, and stationery under license from The Walt Disney Company. In 2011, the decision was made to close the Wonderkite line, and the entire textile collection was released under the Kite brand, expanding the product line to 328 items. In 2016, the first collection of PU backpacks was released. In 2017, the company underwent a rebranding, changing its logo to a minimalist design. A new licensed series, College Line, was created, inspired by elite school uniforms of English and American universities. In 2018, singer Michelle Andrade was invited as a trendsetter for the presentation of the new collection, and a promotional campaign #KiteBeOriginal was conducted with her participation. In 2019, the group 'Vremya i Steklo' was invited to promote the new collection of stationery and textiles; a line of products called Vislovo was released in collaboration with them. Also in 2019, a collection in collaboration with the series 'Shkola' and the reality project 'Shkola Backstage' was released, where Kite provided backpacks for filming. In the same year, several models of Kite school backpacks received the 'Ergonomic Product' mark from the German Institute of Health and Ergonomics after technical tests for compliance with European standards DIN 33419 / EN ISO 15537. In 2020, Kite presented the new Wonder Kite line, with new models appearing in the 2021 backpack collection. The Wonder Kite line introduced innovative solutions: the AGS system with floating back technology responds to weight and body position, significantly reducing load; the FIDLOCK magnetic lock opens with one movement and automatically snaps shut. In 2021, Kite presented its 2022 collection, adding five new licenses: Mortal Kombat, Rick & Morty, Mavka, Tokidoki, and Likee. New accessories appeared: crossbody bag, miniature wallet bag, and mini backpack. Modular backpacks with original pendant wallets and removable pockets were introduced. The brand also introduced backpacks with AGS (Anti Gravity System) shock-absorbing back panels, being the first to bring this innovation to the Ukrainian market. The brand received an award in the 'Choice of the Year 2021' competition in the 'Backpacks and School Bags of the Year' category. A new author line of stationery, Kite Dogs, was released, with part of the proceeds going to help homeless animals in cooperation with the international charity fund FOUR PAWS. In 2022, Kite released a new thematic line of stationery in patriotic designs to support Ukraine. In the same year, Kite, together with the 'Tvoya Opora' fund, held a charity event aimed at helping Ukrainian children affected by the war. Kite also received the Ukrainian People's Award, winning in the 'Best Backpack of the Year' category based on consumer voting. The brand continues to operate internationally, with products sold in 16 countries and a catalog that includes over 190 backpack models.
