Overview
Klango was a Norwegian Christian record label established in 1959 as part of the Norwegian Pentecostal movement. It became a significant producer of Christian music in Norway, releasing approximately 440 recordings across singles, EPs, LPs, cassettes, and CDs before ceasing operations in 1991. The label was initially associated with the Filadelfia Church in Oslo, and its early recordings were made using equipment from IBRA Radio. Key figures in its early years included Ragnar Sjølie, Karsten Ekorness, Daniel Strøm, and Kjell Hansen, with Egil Fossum and Finn Pedersen later taking over. The label's first release, catalog number F1, featured Kjell Andreassen and Odd Bergum performing four songs with guitar and accordion accompaniment, recorded on stage at Filadelfia Oslo. The duo Kjell og Odd became one of the label's best-selling acts, with their recordings from 1959 to 1964 selling over 250,000 copies. Klango produced a mix of solo, duet, choir, quartet, and string music recordings, with about 200 of its releases being EPs. In 2007, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Pentecostal movement, a 5-CD box set featuring 125 of Klango's best-known recordings from 1959 to 1991 was released. After the label closed in 1991, the rights to its archive were held by Filadelfiaforlaget A/S and later acquired by Farstad Sound Productions, owned by Per Kjetil Farstad. The label's legacy is preserved through these reissues and its historical significance in Norwegian Christian music.
History
Klango was established in 1959 as a record label within the Norwegian Pentecostal movement. During the 1950s and 1960s, there was a vibrant song and music scene within the movement, and Klango emerged to capture and distribute this music. The label's very first recording, catalog number F1, featured Kjell Andreassen and Odd Bergum performing four of their own songs with guitar and accordion accompaniment. The recording took place on the stage of Filadelfia Oslo. Early key personnel included Ragnar Sjølie, Karsten Ekorness, Daniel Strøm, and Kjell Hansen, with Egil Fossum and Finn Pedersen later taking over leadership. The first gramophone recordings used equipment from IBRA Radio. Later, larger productions were made with the Filadelfiakoret choir and the Ibra Orchestra, but most releases were smaller productions featuring solo singing, duets, choir singing, quartets, and string music groups. Several recordings became commercial successes. The duo Kjell og Odd (Kjell Andreassen and Odd Bergum) sold over 250,000 records from 1959 to 1964. In total, Klango produced and released approximately 440 recordings, including singles, EPs, LPs, music cassettes, and CDs. About 200 of these were EPs. The label featured many artists, including Milly og Oddny, Karsten Ekorness, Frank Nordli, Einar Ekberg, Per Juvang, Sølvi, Solveig og Ole, Ole Sandvik, Randi Filtvedt Johansen, Ruth og Ole Johnny Larring, Solveig Friis Larsen, Lotta Svartdahl, Egil og Arne, Evie Tornquist, Filadelfiakoret i Oslo, Salem mannskor, and Kirsti Arnesen. In 1991, the record label was closed down. After its closure, the rights to Klango's archive were held by Filadelfiaforlaget A/S, and later acquired by Farstad Sound Productions, owned by Per Kjetil Farstad. In 2007, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Norwegian Pentecostal movement (Pinse for alle), a 5-CD box set was released containing 125 of Klango's best-known recordings from 1959 to 1991.
