Overview
Kotaro Kampo Pharmaceutical is a Kampo specialist manufacturer that states it was the first in Japan to commercialize Kampo extract preparations. Its corporate motto is 'Kampo better, to more people.' The company traces its origin to 1929, when Ueda Chutaro founded 'Ueda Kuroyaki-ten' in Minato-ku, Osaka. In 1952, his eldest son Ueda Taro established 'Kuroyakiyakotaro Co., Ltd.' in Higashi-ku, Osaka (present-day Chuo-ku) and became its first president. In February 1957 the company changed its name to the current 'Kotaro Kampo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.', and in April of the same year began manufacturing and selling 35 Kampo extract formulations, described as an industry first. It currently sells over 200 products, including Kampo extract and crude drug preparations such as five capsule products described as the first capsules for medical Kampo preparations, as well as products for Kampo consultation stores and for drugstores and general stores.
History
Kotaro Kampo Pharmaceutical traces its origin to 1929, when Ueda Chutaro founded 'Ueda Kuroyaki-ten' in Minato-ku, Osaka. In 1952, his eldest son Ueda Taro established 'Kuroyakiyakotaro Co., Ltd.' in Higashi-ku, Osaka (present-day Chuo-ku) and became its first president. At the time, Kampo medicines were mainly decoctions made by boiling crude drugs, which were not suitable for daily use. Inspired by powdered milk, the company began developing Kampo extract preparations, with guidance and support from experts including then-Assistant Professor Shintaro Takahashi of Osaka University (later Professor of Pharmacognosy), his assistant Shigeaki Kuwano (later the first director of Kotaro Kampo Pharmaceutical's research institute), and Professor Koichi Kimura of Kyoto University's Faculty of Medicine, Department of Pharmacy. In 1957, using what was then cutting-edge formulation technology, the development succeeded. In February 1957 the company changed its name to the current 'Kotaro Kampo Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.', and in April of the same year began manufacturing and selling 35 Kampo extract formulations, described as an industry first. The company states it currently sells over 200 products, including Kampo extract and crude drug preparations such as five capsule products described as the first capsules for medical Kampo preparations, as well as products for Kampo consultation stores and for drugstores and general stores.
