Overview

Lalan Group is described on its official website as one of Sri Lanka's largest diversified conglomerates, with subsidiaries in plantations, manufacturing, logistics, printing and packaging, engineering services, and hospitality. Established in 1940, the group states it has over 46 subsidiaries and roots in the plantation sector, with over 17,500 acres of plantation property. Its rubber manufacturing operations produce latex and rubber value-added products, and the group says it works with rubber smallholders and the Government to develop the rubber industry. It reports 10,000 employees and quality certifications including Forest Stewardship Certification.

History

According to the group's timeline, in 1940 father and son Peter Hapangama and David Hapangama started rubber trading operations. In 1983 David's son, Lalith Hapangama, joined the family business, bringing in value-added manufacturing concepts. In 1984 the first Lalan Printing and Packaging factory was commissioned, marking the first diversification from the core rubber trading business. In 1987 Lalan Rubbers was established and began rubber glove manufacturing operations, which eventually overtook rubber trading as the core business of the growing group. Between 1988 and 1998 Lalan Rubbers expanded from one production facility to six production facilities. Between 1998 and 2000 further expansion saw Lalan Rubbers and Lalan Printing and Packaging grow. In 2003 Lalan diversified into the plantation sector, and the group states it currently holds over 17,000 acres of rubber, tea and coconut plantations. Between 2004 and 2009 Lalan built on its international presence through the acquisition of several UK-based companies, with further diversification into the engineering and leisure sectors. Between 2009 and 2014 Lalan Rubbers set out on an expansion drive, growing to nine production facilities and expanding its product portfolio, and Lalan ventured into the renewable energy sector. From 2014 onward the fourth generation of the family joined the business, and Lalan's international operations further expanded with the creation of Lalan Malaysia, Lalan Brazil, Lalan Turkey, and Lalan Middle East.
