Overview

Laox is a Japanese retail group whose origins trace to 1930, when founder Masaharu Taniguchi established Taniguchi Shoten in Sumida, Tokyo. The current company was formed in 1976 as Laox Co., Ltd., and it opened its first comprehensive duty-free store, the Akihabara main store, in 2009. It became a subsidiary within the Suning group and operates retail, gift, apparel, logistics, and China-facing businesses. In October 2022 it moved to a holding company structure and changed its name to Laox Holdings.

History

Laox's history begins in May 1930, when founder Masaharu Taniguchi established Taniguchi Shoten in Sumida, Tokyo. In October 1945 the business was relocated to Chiyoda, Tokyo and reorganized as Taniguchi Electric Co., Ltd. In July 1948 the home appliance division was separated to establish Asahi Radio Electric Co., Ltd., and in September 1976 the sales division was separated from Asahi Radio Electric to establish Laox Co., Ltd. The company listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in December 1999. In June 2009 it concluded a business and capital alliance with Suning Appliance Co., Ltd. (now Suning.com) and Japan Duty Free Co., Ltd., and in October 2009 opened its first comprehensive duty-free store, the Akihabara main store. In September 2010 it carried out a third-party allotment of new shares to GRANDA MAGIC LIMITED (a subsidiary of Suning.com) and Japan Duty Free Co., Ltd. In December 2011 it opened its first China store, the Nanjing Laox Life Plaza Galaxy store, though physical store operations there ended in 2016 after a strategic review. In July 2014 it launched overseas e-commerce on Suning.com. In April 2015 it issued third-round share options to GRANDA MAGIC LIMITED. In July 2015 it opened a Laox overseas flagship store on T-mall Global and acquired 100% of Mode et Jacomo. In October 2017 it acquired 95% of Ogitsu and 100% of Kowa Sogyo. In April 2018 it acquired Shaddy Co., Ltd. and made it a consolidated subsidiary. In September 2018 it completed entry onto China's three major platforms (T-mall Global, Suning.com, Kaola.com). In April 2019 it opened a Japan Pavilion in Shanghai. In 2021 it launched new domestic retail formats including LAOX BEAUTY AIRPORT and Ajia Taiyo Ichiba, and opened LAOX SELECT in Hainan and Jinan. In April 2022 it moved to the new Standard Market segment, and in October 2022 it transitioned to a holding company structure and changed its name to Laox Holdings. In May 2023 it acquired all shares of Barneys Japan and made it a consolidated subsidiary.
