Overview
L'Atalante is an independent publishing house founded in 1989, known for publishing authors from around the world. It began as a bookstore in Nantes and later expanded into publishing, focusing on cinema and then genre literature. Since the 2000s, it has dedicated itself almost exclusively to imaginative literature. In 2012, it became a Scop (worker cooperative).
History
In 1979, Pierre Michaut opened a bookstore in Nantes called L'Atalante, specializing in cinema, crime, and science fiction, which he moved to rue des Vieilles-Douves in autumn 1986. Publishing activity began in 1982 with a focus on cinema, starting with 'Les Mémoires de Groucho Marx'. In 1988, La Bibliothèque de l'Évasion was created, covering genre literature. Due to the success of Terry Pratchett's 'Disque-monde' and Pierre Bordage's 'Guerriers du silence' from 1993, science fiction grew in importance, and L'Atalante dedicated itself almost exclusively to imaginative literature from the 2000s. In 2012, L'Atalante became a Scop and now publishes 35 books per year in print and digital formats. In 2021, it launched the Fusion collection for crime fiction.
