Overview

Les Passages Pasteur is a shopping centre located in the historic centre of Besançon, in the Franche-Comté region of eastern France. It was inaugurated on 18 November 2015 as the culmination of a long-running urban regeneration programme initiated by the City of Besançon in 1998. The centre sits on Place Pasteur, at the junction of the pedestrianised Rue Pasteur and Grande Rue, on the axis between Place du 8 Septembre and Pont Battant. It is served by tram lines 1 and 2 and numerous bus routes. The centre is fully covered, air-conditioned and naturally lit by two large glass roofs, with the exception of the courtyard of the Hôtel de Rosières. It is arranged over four levels and covers approximately 15,000 m². The ground floor and first floor house retail spaces, including some mid-sized units spanning two levels; the mezzanine level contains commercial storage and technical areas; and the first basement level is partly occupied by a Monoprix store, accessible from the ground floor. The architectural design of the glass roof is attributed to Chapman Taylor. Les Passages Pasteur brings together around twenty shops, restaurants and services under its contemporary glass canopy. Its retail mix spans fashion and accessories, beauty and health, food and dining, and sport. The centre positions itself as a 'place to live' as much as a place to shop, hosting family events such as Sam'Kids creative workshops on the first and second Saturdays of each month, a pirate-themed treetop adventure, and competitions with the Carte Avantages Jeunes. Practical services include an Amazon Locker, Mondial Relay parcel point, B Bot recycling, Monoprix home delivery, free Wi-Fi, umbrella loan, a nursery space, a 250-space underground car park with video surveillance, and various vending machines including Hirsinger chocolates and Pokémon cards. The centre is open six days a week throughout the year and is located two minutes from the historic centre. It forms part of the revitalisation of Besançon's city centre, which also included around a hundred housing units, a new large car park and new public spaces. The surrounding pedestrian areas, including Place Pasteur, were redeveloped and inaugurated in 2007.

History

The origins of Les Passages Pasteur lie in a revitalisation programme for the centre of Besançon initiated by the City of Besançon in 1998. The programme aimed to redynamise the city centre and included around a hundred housing units, a new large car park in the city centre, and new public spaces. The site, which had strong heritage value, consisted of dilapidated or industrial buildings at its heart, which were demolished, alongside 16th- and 19th-century buildings that were renovated. The requalification of the surrounding pedestrian public spaces, notably the redevelopment of Place Pasteur, was inaugurated in 2007 and completed this vast restructuring operation. The shopping centre itself was inaugurated on 18 November 2015. It was designed to be fully covered, air-conditioned and naturally lit by two large glass roofs, with the exception of the courtyard of the Hôtel de Rosières. The commercial complex is arranged over four levels and covers 15,000 m². The ground floor and first floor accommodate retail spaces, including some mid-sized units over two levels; the mezzanine houses commercial storage and technical premises; and the first basement level is partly occupied by Monoprix, accessible from the ground floor of the store. The architectural design of the glass roof is signed by Chapman Taylor. Since opening, the centre has operated as a mixed retail and lifestyle destination, hosting around twenty shops and restaurants alongside services and family-oriented events. It is open six days a week throughout the year and is located two minutes from the historic centre. The centre is served by tram lines 1 and 2 and bus lines 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 21 and 27, and sits on Place Pasteur at the crossroads of Rue Pasteur and Grande Rue, both pedestrianised in this sector, strategically placed on the axis between Place du 8 Septembre and Pont Battant.
