Overview
Librairie Pantoute is an independent bookstore in Quebec City, founded in 1972 by Denis LeBrun and Maryvonne Le Port. It operates in the Vieux-Québec and Saint-Roch neighbourhoods and carries more than 40,000 titles in inventory. The bookstore also provides institutional services to schools, libraries, childcare centres, government bodies and businesses.
History
Librairie Pantoute was founded in 1972 by Denis LeBrun and Maryvonne Le Port, during a period described as one of counterculture, the Vietnam War and renewed feminism. Between 1975 and 1976 it was one of the few bookstores importing European comic albums and magazines such as L'écho des Savanes, Ah! Nana, Métal Hurlant and Fluide Glacial. In 1978 its ownership structure changed when its three owners ceded the majority of their shares to twenty-four of their best customers, described as an unprecedented partnership for a bookstore. In 1980 the Bulletin Pantoute circulated in Quebec and two years later became Nuit Blanche, which became independent in 1990; the literary magazine won the Grand prix des revues culturelles du Québec three times between 1980 and 1990. In 1985 Pantoute established its premises at 1100 rue Saint-Jean, with a larger space and a mezzanine. In 1996 Pantoute produced a television programme. The bookstore is located in the Vieux-Québec and Saint-Roch neighbourhoods and holds more than 40,000 titles in inventory.
