Overview

LittleBigPlanet is a PlayStation video-game series created by the British studio Media Molecule and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, later Sony Interactive Entertainment. The series began with LittleBigPlanet on PlayStation 3 in 2008 and became known for combining conventional platforming with a highly flexible creation system. Players control Sackboy, a small stitched character whose visual design helped make the property recognizable, while exploring imaginative stages assembled from fabric, cardboard, wood, stickers, objects, and other tactile-looking materials. The brand's defining idea is expressed through the series' emphasis on playing, creating, and sharing. In addition to story levels, players can build their own stages, games, vehicles, contraptions, decorations, and audiovisual scenes. The creation tools were designed to make experimentation accessible while still allowing complex logic and interactive behavior. Completed creations could be published for other players to discover, rate, and play, making the series an early prominent console example of a platform that treated user-generated content as a central product feature rather than an optional editor. The original game was followed by LittleBigPlanet 2 in 2011, which broadened the editor beyond conventional platform levels and supported more varied game structures. Versions and related releases extended the concept to PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation 4. The franchise also produced downloadable content, licensed costumes, accessories, and cross-media appearances. Sackboy later became the lead character of Sackboy: A Big Adventure, a related platform game that retained the character and visual identity while placing less emphasis on the traditional LittleBigPlanet creation-and-sharing framework. LittleBigPlanet's commercial and cultural importance lies less in a single mechanical innovation than in its combination of approachable platforming, expressive customization, social discovery, and a distinctive handmade art direction. It helped establish Media Molecule as a studio associated with creative play and influenced how console publishers presented user-generated content. At the same time, the brand depended on network services to host and distribute community creations. Online functionality for older entries was subsequently reduced or discontinued, leaving the franchise's long-term availability dependent on individual platforms, local content, and Sony's service decisions. No current standalone corporate entity exists under the LittleBigPlanet name; it remains a Sony-owned game property whose active status as a continuing series is not clearly established.

History

LittleBigPlanet originated at Media Molecule, an independent British studio founded by former Lionhead developers. Sony became involved with the project during its development and positioned the game as a distinctive PlayStation 3 experience. Rather than treating a level editor as a secondary feature, the project made creation and sharing part of its central identity. Its visual language used stitched fabric, craft materials, expressive animated objects, and a small avatar called Sackboy, giving the game a warm handmade appearance that contrasted with the more realistic presentation common in many contemporary console releases. LittleBigPlanet launched for PlayStation 3 in 2008. Its story campaign supplied a structured introduction to the movement and building systems, while the creation mode allowed players to construct stages and publish them online. The resulting community library became a major part of the brand's appeal. Players could use a range of materials and interactive components to make platform stages, puzzles, racing sections, music sequences, mini-games, and experimental constructions. The combination of authored content and community content also allowed Sony and Media Molecule to support the game after launch through updates, downloadable costumes, themed packs, and special events. A PlayStation Portable edition followed in 2009. It adapted the concept to Sony's handheld platform and expanded the franchise's reach, although its technical and network features differed from the console versions. LittleBigPlanet 2 arrived for PlayStation 3 in 2011 and substantially expanded the creative toolset. It supported more elaborate logic, vehicles, non-platform game structures, and presentation options, presenting the software as a broader game-making environment as well as a traditional platform game. The sequel reinforced the idea that the LittleBigPlanet brand was a creative platform and community ecosystem. The series continued on PlayStation Vita in 2012 with a version designed around the handheld's touch and motion capabilities. LittleBigPlanet 3 was released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in 2014. Development was led by Sumo Digital rather than Media Molecule, while Media Molecule remained closely associated with the property. The game retained the series' familiar creation and sharing principles and introduced additional playable characters with different abilities. Existing community content and the wider history of the platform made backward compatibility and service continuity important parts of the user experience. Sackboy also appeared outside the core numbered series, including in crossover and companion products. Sackboy: A Big Adventure, released in 2020 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, presented a more conventional three-dimensional platforming adventure. It preserved the character, craft-inspired art direction, cooperative tone, and customization culture, but it was not structured around the same level-building ecosystem as the main LittleBigPlanet games. Media Molecule later focused on Dreams, another Sony-backed creative project that extended the studio's interest in user-made interactive content through a broader creation environment. Because user-created levels were hosted and discovered through online services, the brand's history is inseparable from the lifecycle of PlayStation Network features. Sony eventually retired online functionality for older LittleBigPlanet titles. In 2024, online services for the remaining supported games were permanently shut down after a period in which malicious messages and other disruptive activity affected the community. This curtailed the original networked sharing model and means that LittleBigPlanet's most distinctive social feature is no longer uniformly available. The games, however, remain historically significant examples of console software that integrated platform gameplay, digital creation tools, social distribution, and character-driven branding.
