Overview
LOXXESS (Loxxess AG) is a German contract logistics provider focused on complex outsourcing projects for industry and retail. The family-owned company develops tailored logistics and fulfillment solutions and operates through three main segments: Omnichannel & E-Commerce, Pharma & Healthcare, and Industry/Dedicated Solutions. It is 100% owned by the Amberger family and is headquartered in Germany. The company traces its roots to the Material Depot Service Gesellschaft mbH (MDSG), a state-owned entity created to store former East German military material and support consolidation and deconsolidation during German reunification. After privatization in 1994 and a sale to today's shareholders in 1998, the business was restructured in 1999–2000. In 2001, the former MDSG companies in Biebesheim am Rhein, Buchen, Kitzingen, Merkendorf and Lohfelden, along with Schertler Eurologistik in Neuburg, were contributed into Loxxess AG. Internationalization began in 2005 with the acquisition of Polish company Transteam and the construction of a logistics center in Bor, Czech Republic. In 2006, Loxxess took over twelve locations of ABX Contract Logistics Deutschland GmbH, adding sites in Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Hannover, Duisburg, Gladbeck, Cologne, Mannheim, Homburg and Munich. In 2009, it entered media logistics by acquiring the former Premus Logistik, a subsidiary of the Premiere Group (today Sky Deutschland). By 2023, the company operated at 28 locations in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic, managing around 400,000 square meters of warehouse space, including two fully automated high-bay warehouses. LOXXESS operates as a holding for individual operating companies, each responsible for its own services. It is led by a multi-member management team composed of managing directors of the individual companies, which acts as a management board and reports to the executive board. The company specializes in six industries: Industrial + Chemical Services, Mail Order + E-Commerce, Consumer Electronics + Media Products, Sports + Lifestyle, FMCG + Sensitive Goods, and Pharma + Healthcare. In 2000, founder and current supervisory board chairman Peter Amberger established Loxxess Pharma, a specialist pharmaceutical logistics company. Loxxess Pharma was originally a joint venture with Aenova Holding GmbH (33%) and Walgreens Boots Alliance (33%), with Loxxess holding 34%. Since July 2021, Loxxess Pharma has been 100% owned by Loxxess. It operates sites in Gelting (15,000 m²), Wolfratshausen (high-bay warehouse with 30,000 pallet spaces and 10,000 m² ramp warehouse) and Neutraubling (30,000 m²). Loxxess Pharma employs around 180 people, including three licensed and doctoral pharmacists, and generated revenue of EUR 45 million in 2018 (previous year: EUR 26 million). In 2025, LOXXESS ranked 39th in the "Top 50 Logistics Companies 2025" list published by Markt und Mittelstand and Die Deutsche Wirtschaft, based on a scientifically supported scoring with 39 criteria. The company continues to invest in digitalization and AI, and emphasizes sustainability as a core value.
History
The history of Loxxess AG begins with the Material Depot Service Gesellschaft mbH (MDSG), a state-owned company based in Bonn-Bad Godesberg. MDSG was founded to store former material stocks of the East German National People's Army (NVA) and to provide consolidation and deconsolidation services for transfer goods during German reunification. In 1994, the company was privatized, and in 1998 it was sold to today's shareholders. The years 1999 and 2000 were used to restructure the business and develop new fields of activity. In 2001, the former MDSG companies in Biebesheim am Rhein, Buchen, Kitzingen, Merkendorf and Lohfelden, as well as Schertler Eurologistik in Neuburg, were contributed into Loxxess AG. Internationalization began in 2005. The acquisition of the Polish company Transteam expanded the branch network in Warsaw, and the construction of a new logistics center in Bor, Czech Republic, opened a branch in the Czech Republic. In the logistics park there, the company now operates several warehouses for various customers. In 2006, Loxxess took over twelve locations of ABX Contract Logistics Deutschland GmbH because ABX Logistics was withdrawing from Germany. This added locations in Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen, Hannover, Duisburg, Gladbeck, Cologne, Mannheim, Homburg and Munich. In 2009, Loxxess entered media logistics by acquiring the former Premus Logistik, a subsidiary of the Premiere Group (today Sky Deutschland). By 2023, the company was represented at a total of 28 locations in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic and managed around 400,000 square meters of warehouse space, including two fully automated high-bay warehouses. In 2000, Peter Amberger, founder and current chairman of the supervisory board of Loxxess, founded Loxxess Pharma, a company specializing in pharmaceutical logistics. Loxxess Pharma was a joint venture in which Loxxess held 34%, Aenova Holding GmbH held 33%, and the global pharmaceutical wholesaler Walgreens Boots Alliance held 33%. Since July 2021, the company has been 100% owned by Loxxess. Loxxess Pharma operates sites in Gelting (15,000 m² warehouse space), Wolfratshausen (high-bay warehouse with 30,000 pallet spaces and 10,000 m² ramp warehouse) and Neutraubling (30,000 m² warehouse space). Loxxess Pharma employs around 180 people, including three licensed and doctoral pharmacists, to ensure the required quality in the pharmaceutical sector (2018), and generated revenue of EUR 45 million in 2018 (previous year: EUR 26 million). Loxxess operates as a holding for the individual companies, each of which has operational responsibility for the services provided. The AG is led by a multi-member management team consisting of the managing directors of the individual companies, which acts as a management board and reports to the executive board. Loxxess specializes in six industries: Industrial + Chemical Services, Mail Order + E-Commerce, Consumer Electronics + Media Products, Sports + Lifestyle, FMCG + Sensitive Goods, and Pharma + Healthcare. In 2025, LOXXESS ranked 39th in the "Top 50 Logistics Companies 2025" published by Markt und Mittelstand and Die Deutsche Wirtschaft. The ranking is based on a scientifically supported scoring with 39 criteria and reflects the performance of mid-sized logistics companies in Germany. The company continues to invest in digitalization and AI and emphasizes sustainability as a core value.
