Overview

LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE is a French multinational holding company and luxury-goods conglomerate headquartered in Paris. It was created in 1987 when Louis Vuitton merged with Moët Hennessy. The latter had been formed in 1971 through the combination of Champagne producer Moët & Chandon, whose origins date to 1743, and cognac house Hennessy, founded in 1765. LVMH therefore combines a relatively recent corporate structure with maisons that possess histories extending across several centuries. The group operates through a portfolio model. Rather than presenting all businesses as one standardized consumer brand, it generally allows its maisons to preserve their own design languages, heritage, management cultures and distribution strategies. Its principal business areas are wines and spirits; fashion and leather goods; perfumes and cosmetics; watches and jewelry; selective retailing; and other activities, including media. Well-known maisons and businesses associated with the group include Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior, Fendi, Celine, Givenchy, Loewe, Kenzo, Loro Piana, Marc Jacobs, Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon, Hennessy, Ruinart, Bulgari, TAG Heuer, Tiffany & Co., Sephora and Château d’Yquem. Bernard Arnault became central to LVMH’s development after the merger. He was invited to invest during a power struggle between the leaders of the predecessor companies and subsequently secured control of the group. He became chairman and chief executive in 1989. Under his leadership, LVMH pursued a strategy of acquiring prestigious houses, investing in craftsmanship and retail networks, and maintaining scarcity and pricing power while expanding internationally. Acquisitions such as Bulgari, Christian Dior’s couture and fashion activities, Tiffany & Co., and selected specialist manufacturers strengthened its presence in jewelry, fashion and watches. The group has also invested in emerging labels and digital commerce, while its media arm, Les Echos-Le Parisien Group, gives it interests beyond traditional luxury goods. LVMH’s commercial model combines heritage, product innovation, direct retail, selective wholesale, hospitality and cultural sponsorship. Its maisons sell apparel, leather goods, jewelry, watches, fragrances, cosmetics, champagne, wine and cognac, while Sephora provides a large-scale selective beauty-retailing platform. The company is especially prominent in France, Japan and the United States, with a broad international store and production footprint. In April 2023 it became the first European company reported to exceed a $500 billion valuation. It reported revenue of €84.68 billion for 2024, including 1% organic growth for the year. The group remains active, although the luxury market weakened in 2025 and LVMH reported lower first-half revenue and profit in that period.

History

LVMH emerged from the 1987 merger of Louis Vuitton and Moët Hennessy. Louis Vuitton brought a fashion and travel-goods heritage dating to the nineteenth century, while Moët Hennessy united champagne and cognac businesses with much older histories. The merger created a platform capable of combining luxury manufacturing, brand management and international distribution across several categories. The new group initially faced disagreement between Alain Chevalier, associated with Moët Hennessy, and Henry Racamier, who led Louis Vuitton. Bernard Arnault entered as an investor during this conflict and ultimately took control of LVMH. His appointment as chairman and chief executive in 1989 established the management model that has defined the group: assemble a portfolio of highly recognizable houses, preserve their individual identities, and supply capital and international infrastructure without eliminating their distinctiveness. During the following decades LVMH expanded across fashion, beauty, wines and spirits, watches, jewelry and retail. Make Up For Ever joined the group in 1999. The acquisition of Bulgari in 2011 broadened the jewelry and watch portfolio, while later investments added or strengthened specialist labels and emerging designers. In 2017 LVMH moved Christian Dior’s fashion and leather-goods activities into the group, consolidating control of a major French luxury house. The 2019 launch of Fenty represented an effort to create a new fashion house with Rihanna and to reach a wider contemporary audience. The proposed acquisition of Tiffany & Co. became one of the group’s most consequential transactions. LVMH agreed to buy Tiffany in 2019, but in 2020 attempted to abandon the transaction, citing contractual and business concerns during the pandemic. Tiffany sued, and the companies later renegotiated the price and completed the acquisition in January 2021. Tiffany significantly increased LVMH’s scale in high jewelry and added a globally prominent American maison. LVMH continued selective expansion through investments in labels such as Aimé Leon Dore, acquisitions involving Pedemonte Group, Barton Perreira and Swiza, and additional activity in specialist watchmaking. The company also developed selective retailing through Sephora and broadened its corporate interests through Les Echos-Le Parisien Group, which owns or participates in newspapers, magazines, broadcasting, research and events businesses. Its digital strategy has included investment in Lyst and a strengthened partnership with Alibaba for China. The group is a major patron of contemporary art and cultural exhibitions, including through the Fondation Louis Vuitton and other sponsorship initiatives. Its houses use exhibitions, architecture, artists’ collaborations and cultural programming to reinforce the symbolic value of their products. LVMH reached a reported valuation above $500 billion in April 2023. After strong expansion during the preceding luxury boom, it faced a more difficult market in 2025, with reported declines in revenue and profit during the first half of the year. LVMH nevertheless remains an active global group organized around a large collection of luxury maisons.
