Overview
Mac mini is a small-form-factor desktop computer brand within Apple Inc.'s Mac product family. Introduced in January 2005 at the Macworld conference, it was Apple's first new Mac since the original iMac and was positioned as a low-cost, bring-your-own-display-and-keyboard desktop — the cheapest way to own a Mac. The original model was a 6.5-inch-square, 2-inch-tall aluminum-and-plastic cube powered by a PowerPC G4 processor, sold without a monitor, keyboard or mouse. The brand has been defined by its compact footprint and its role as the entry-level and switcher-oriented Mac. Over successive generations the Mac mini moved from PowerPC G4 to Intel Core processors (from 2006), adopted unibody aluminum enclosures, gained HDMI and Thunderbolt ports, and shifted to Apple silicon with the M1 chip in 2020. A server-oriented variant, Mac mini Server, was offered for several years for small-business and home-server use before being discontinued. Mac mini is sold worldwide through Apple's retail stores, online store and authorized resellers, and is widely used beyond the consumer market — in education, as a media center, in software development and build farms, and as a compact workstation. It is a product brand rather than a separate company: it is owned, designed and marketed by Apple Inc., a publicly traded company listed on NASDAQ under the ticker AAPL, headquartered in Cupertino, California. Positioning has remained consistent: the most affordable new Mac, the smallest desktop, and the model most likely to attract Windows switchers who already own a display. Apple has periodically refreshed the line with new chips and port configurations while keeping the same minimalist industrial design language.
History
The Mac mini was announced by Steve Jobs at the Macworld Conference & Expo in January 2005, alongside the iPod shuffle, as Apple's answer to the question of a low-cost Mac. It was the first entirely new Macintosh model introduced since the original iMac in 1998, and it replaced the Power Mac G4 Cube concept of a small, display-less desktop. The launch model used a 1.25 GHz or 1.42 GHz PowerPC G4 processor in a 6.5-inch square, 2-inch tall enclosure, and was notable for shipping without a keyboard, mouse or monitor — a deliberate choice that let Apple hit a low price point and let buyers reuse existing peripherals. In 2006 the line transitioned to Intel Core Solo and Core Duo processors as part of Apple's broader move from PowerPC to Intel, and it gained a Front Row remote and later an infrared receiver for media-center use. The 2010 redesign moved to a unibody aluminum enclosure with a removable bottom panel for user-accessible memory, dropped the optical drive, and added an HDMI port — cementing the Mac mini's role as a living-room and home-theater PC option. A Mac mini Server configuration, with two internal drives and no optical drive, was offered for small-business and home-server customers. Subsequent revisions in 2011, 2012 and 2014 removed the optical drive entirely, soldered memory in some models, and shifted to dual Thunderbolt and then Thunderbolt 2 ports. The 2018 model brought a space-gray finish, quad- and six-core Intel processors, Thunderbolt 3 over USB-C, and user-upgradable SO-DIMM memory. In November 2020, Apple introduced the first Apple silicon Mac mini with the M1 chip, alongside the M1 MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, marking the beginning of Apple's transition away from Intel. Later generations moved to M2 and M2 Pro chips and, subsequently, M4-family silicon, with a smaller redesigned chassis and front-facing ports on the most recent model. Throughout its history the Mac mini has remained a niche but durable product: never Apple's volume seller, but consistently the cheapest Mac, a popular education and kiosk machine, a common build server for iOS and macOS developers, and a frequent choice for media centers and small offices. Its longevity — spanning PowerPC, Intel and Apple silicon eras — makes it one of Apple's longest continuously produced Mac lines.
