Overview

Macquarie Asset Management (MAM) is the asset-management division of Macquarie Group Limited, the Sydney-headquartered diversified financial group listed on the Australian Securities Exchange. MAM brings together Macquarie's long-standing investment businesses — public-market equities and fixed income, multi-asset and systematic strategies, private credit, and above all its specialist real-assets franchises in infrastructure, renewables and real estate — under a single global asset-management brand. It serves institutional investors, sovereign wealth funds, pension plans, insurers and, through Macquarie's retail distribution, individual investors, and it operates across Australia, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the United Kingdom and the Americas. MAM's identity is closely tied to Macquarie's heritage as an infrastructure investor and advisor. The group built its reputation on pioneering infrastructure funds and on the privatisation and long-term ownership of toll roads, airports, utilities, energy networks and communications assets, and MAM is the vehicle through which much of that capital and expertise is now managed for third-party clients. Alongside infrastructure, MAM manages green and energy-transition investments, real estate, agriculture and natural assets, private credit and a broad suite of listed funds and separately managed accounts. As part of Macquarie Group, MAM is not separately listed; its results are reported within the group's Asset Management operating group. The division is led by global leadership drawn from Macquarie's senior ranks and works closely with the group's investment banking and commodities businesses. Its positioning emphasises specialist, active and real-asset-led investing, long investment horizons and deep operational involvement in assets, rather than pure passive index management. The brand is a familiar name in global infrastructure and private-markets fundraising and is increasingly associated with energy-transition and decarbonisation strategies.

History

Macquarie Asset Management's history is inseparable from that of Macquarie Group. Macquarie was founded in Sydney in 1969 as Hill Samuel Australia, a subsidiary of the UK merchant bank Hill Samuel, and became Macquarie Bank in the 1980s after being granted an Australian banking licence. From the 1990s the firm developed a distinctive model combining advisory work, principal investing and specialist funds, and it became a pioneer of private infrastructure investment — advising governments on privatisations and then raising funds to own and operate toll roads, airports, ports, utilities and energy networks for the long term. Those activities were organised over time into Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets (MIRA), which grew into one of the world's largest infrastructure managers, and into parallel businesses in real estate, agriculture, private credit and listed funds. Macquarie also built a substantial public-markets asset-management business through its securities and funds-management divisions, including equities, fixed income and multi-asset capabilities, and expanded internationally across Europe, the Americas and Asia. In the 2010s and 2020s Macquarie sharpened its focus on energy transition and green investment, consolidating activities under the Green Investment Group, acquired from the UK government, and positioning its infrastructure franchise around renewables, grid and decarbonisation assets. The group reorganised its asset-management activities under the unified Macquarie Asset Management brand, bringing MIRA, public markets, real estate, private credit and green investment together as one global division reported within Macquarie Group's Asset Management operating group. MAM has continued to raise large global infrastructure and energy-transition funds and to manage assets on behalf of institutional clients worldwide, while remaining a division of the ASX-listed Macquarie Group rather than a separately listed entity.
