Overview
Major Wire, formally Major Wire Industries (Les Industries Fil Métallique Major), is a Canadian manufacturer of high-performance screening media used in the aggregate, mining, recycling, energy and fertilizer industries. The company is headquartered in Candiac, Quebec, a suburb of Montreal, and operates manufacturing plants and offices in Canada, the United States, Belgium and China. Its subsidiaries include Major Wire Screen Media in Fife, Washington, and Major Screening in Salisbury, formerly known as W.S. Tyler Screening. Founded in 1884 by Edward James Major as The Major Manufacturing Company, the business initially produced wire fencing, safety screens for windows and other woven wire products. Over more than 140 years it evolved into a specialist in screening media, introducing the FLEX-MAT line of self-cleaning high-vibration wire screens in 1996. FLEX-MAT technology bonds wires to lime-green polyurethane strips so that they vibrate independently from hook to hook, improving material stratification and reducing blinding, pegging and clogging. The product line also includes modular polyurethane panels, premium woven wire mesh, flat mesh and rolls, and the Thermo Screen for extreme heat applications. Major Wire positions itself as a high-value partner to producers, offering complimentary on-site services such as Screening Performance Assessments, technical assistance and Screen Maintenance Simplified training seminars through a network of authorized FLEX-MAT dealers. The company has been ISO 9001 registered since 2000. Since January 1, 2012, German family-managed company Haver & Boecker has held a 40% stake in Major Wire, becoming majority owner on January 1, 2016. Today Major Wire is a wholly owned subsidiary of Haver & Boecker and serves as the group's unit globally responsible for pre-crimped wire screens targeted at the aggregate and mining markets.
History
Major Wire traces its origins to 1879, when Edward James Major and Patrick Thomas Gibb founded Major & Gibb. The company initially manufactured small woven wire sieves, decorative wire mesh and safety steel screens, the latter used to protect bank tellers from armed robbery; the Bank of Montreal purchased such security cages in the early 20th century. In 1884, Major & Gibb merged with R. Jellyman & Co – Paper Box Manufacturers to form The Major Manufacturing Company. The official website states the company was founded in 1884 by Mr. E. J. Major, while the French Wikipedia article gives 1875 as the creation date and 1879 as the founding of Major & Gibb; the 1884 date is used here as the formal corporate founding. In 1972, the company changed its name to Major Wire Industries (Les Industries Fil Métallique Major). In 1990, Jean Leblond purchased the company from Richard Pinsonnault and Richard Pinsonnault Jr. To finance the acquisition, Leblond was introduced to Swiss financier Jürg Stäubli. In 1996, Major introduced FLEX-MAT to the North American market, a hybrid self-cleaning screening media made of polyurethane and metal. Unlike self-cleaning screens already available in Europe such as Giron's ONDAP GOMME, FLEX-MAT has no weft wires; only the polyurethane of the transverse strips holds the screen wires, which the manufacturer says ensures a better anti-clogging effect and increases vibration from hook to hook. The company registered ISO 9001 in 2000. In 2005, Major Wire launched Flex-Mat 3. In 2007, it opened a woven screen manufacturing plant in China for standard specifications and launched Flex-Mat 3 Modular. On January 1, 2012, Haver & Boecker, a private German company active in screening, fine mesh and packaging markets, acquired 40% of Major Wire's shares. On January 1, 2016, Haver & Boecker became majority owner, with Bernard Betts as president. Today Major Wire is a wholly owned subsidiary of Haver & Boecker and is the group's unit globally responsible for pre-crimped wire screens targeted at the aggregate and mining markets. The company operates manufacturing plants and offices in Canada, the United States, Belgium and China, with headquarters in Candiac, Quebec.
