Overview

Malka Beer (Hebrew: בירה מלכה) is an Israeli craft brewery founded in 2006 by Assaf Lavi, a former Tel Aviv pub owner who moved to the ecological community of Klil in the Western Galilee. The brewery began in Moshav Amka, producing small batches of beer that were first tested with culinary professionals. After finalizing recipes, Lavi distributed the first bottles of Malka Admonit, Malka B'hira, and Malka Kheha from the back of a pickup truck in Tel Aviv. In 2008 the brewery relocated to Kibbutz Yehiam, where it operated for several years. In 2018 production moved to a larger, upgraded facility in the Mitzpeh Tefen Industrial Zone in the Western Galilee. The brewery is one of Israel's first two craft breweries. Malka Beer produces a core range of unfiltered, preservative-free beers: Malka B'hira (Belgian blonde ale, 6.5% ABV), Malka Admonit (English pale ale, 5.5% ABV), Malka Kheha (Irish stout, 6% ABV), Malka Khita (American wheat beer, 5% ABV), and Malka Hindy (IPA, 6.2% ABV). Limited editions include Malka Hazaka (9% ABV) and an Independence Day edition with special labels. In August 2020 the brewery released Malka Mezukeket, a limited-edition clear spirit at 44.4% ABV distilled from Malka B'hira. The brewery also produces the Negev Beer brand (since 2015) and the Herzl beer brand (since 2020). In 2011 Malka Beer signed a distribution agreement with HaKerem - Spirits Ltd. to expand sales to restaurants and retail chains. In 2014 HaKerem acquired 40% of the brewery for 4.8 million shekels, valuing Malka Beer at approximately 12 million shekels. HaKerem later gained control of the company. The brewery operates two visitor sites: Malka Yard (חצר מלכה) in Kibbutz Yehiam, a beer garden open on weekends since 2012, and Malka Salon (סלון מלכה), the official pub and visitor center on the second floor of the Tefen brewery, opened in late 2019, which overlooks the production floor and includes the official store. Water for brewing is drawn largely from nearby Ga'aton Stream springs.
