Overview
Malling Bio is a cinema located at Bredgade 49 in Malling, a town in the southern part of Aarhus Municipality, Denmark, approximately 15 kilometers from central Aarhus. It opened in 1943 with 202 seats. Over the decades, the cinema was modernized and expanded: a second auditorium, Bio2, was added in 1981, and both halls were later renovated with new seats and generous legroom. Today, the main hall (Bio1) seats 75, while Bio2 seats 33. The cinema was digitalized in 2011 with support from sponsors, Aarhus Municipality, and the Danish Film Institute, and in 2014 the small hall was also digitalized with support from the Købmand Herman Sallings Fond. In 2021, Malling Bio reinstalled analog projection equipment, making it the only cinema in Denmark outside Copenhagen capable of screening films in both 35mm and 70mm in any image and sound format; only three cinemas in the country have such equipment. From July 1973 to 2024, the cinema was owned and operated by Per Hauberg. In 2025, it was purchased by two families who planned to reopen it from April 16, 2025. The cinema continues to operate, offering a mix of mainstream and arthouse films, as seen on its website.
History
Malling Bio opened in 1943 with 202 seats in Malling, a town in the southern part of Aarhus Municipality, Denmark. The cinema is located at Bredgade 49. In 1981, a second auditorium, Bio2, was added with 39 seats. Over time, the main hall was reduced to 75 seats to provide more legroom, and Bio2 was later renovated with new seats and generous legroom (122 cm), reducing its capacity to 33 seats. In 2011, the main hall was digitalized with financial support from sponsors, Aarhus Municipality, and the Danish Film Institute. In 2014, the small hall was also digitalized with support from the Købmand Herman Sallings Fond. In 2021, the cinema reinstalled analog projection equipment, making it the only cinema in Denmark outside Copenhagen capable of showing films in both 35mm and 70mm in any image and sound format; only three cinemas in the country have such equipment, the other two being Imperial Bio and Gentofte Kino. From July 1973 to 2024, Malling Bio was owned and operated by Per Hauberg.
