Overview
Manabe Interior Hearts Co., Ltd. (株式会社マナベインテリアハーツ) is a Japanese home-furnishing retailer that sells furniture, curtains, carpets, bedding, bathroom goods, cutlery and other interior products through large-format stores. The company traces its origins to 1961, when it was incorporated as Manabe Furniture Store (有限会社真鍋家具店) in Sukumo, a small city in western Kochi Prefecture. It adopted the name Manabe Interior Hearts in 1993 and opened its first full "home-furnishing" format store in Kobe in 1997, the year the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge opened and made expansion into the Kansai region practical. The company operates stores mainly in western Japan — Kansai, Shikoku, Kyushu, Chubu — and has also expanded into the Kanto region, beginning with the Kamio-PAPA store in Saitama in 2016. As of August 2025 it ran 18 stores: nine in Kansai, two in Shikoku, two in Kyushu, two in Chubu and three in Kanto. It also operates distribution centres in Takatsuki (Osaka), Okawa (Saga) and Kochi, and runs an online shop, Manabe Net Shop, launched in 2014. Manabe Interior Hearts positions itself around a "good quality, low price" philosophy (良品廉価主義) and a customer-first approach to store building. It carries third-party furniture brands such as France Bed and Karimoku, and develops its own private label, MANA casa, started in 2005. The company's name expresses a wish to be a "centre of interiors" and to deliver "rich interiors with love," a meaning explained on its corporate website. Corporate leadership passed from Manabe Yukio to Manabe Moritoshi as president in 1985; in 2023 Moritoshi Manabe became representative director and chairman, and Toru Tsukada became representative director and president. The company was listed on the TOKYO PRO Market in December 2022 and delisted in January 2025. Annual sales were reported at 11.1 billion yen for the fiscal year ending May 2025, with about 500 employees.
History
The company was incorporated in April 1961 as Manabe Furniture Store (有限会社真鍋家具店) in Sukumo, Kochi Prefecture. In 1979 it relocated and rebuilt its Sukumo store with a sales floor of about 500 tsubo and changed its name to Manabe Furniture Store (有限会社まなべ家具店). In 1981 it joined the voluntary chain cooperative Livins, and in 1982 it added a distribution centre at the Sukumo store. In 1985 Moritoshi Manabe became president, while Yukio Manabe became chairman. In 1992 the company opened the Manabe Interior Hearts Kochi store, and in 1993 it changed its corporate name to Manabe Interior Hearts Co., Ltd. A distribution centre was added next to the Kochi store in 1994, and the Nakamura store opened in 1995. In 1997 the Kobe store opened as the company's first full home-furnishing format, coinciding with the opening of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, which facilitated expansion into the Kansai region. The Kochi store was expanded and renovated in 1999. The 2000s saw continued expansion: the Takatsuki store opened in 2002, a merchandise headquarters office was established in Takatsuki in 2003, and in 2005 the company opened a short-term store at Kobe Harborland, opened the Kokura-Kita store, and launched its original development brand MANA casa. The Kobe store was renewed in 2006. Stores followed in Minoo (2007), Wakayama Iwade (2008), Kakogawa Nikke Park Town (2009), AEON Mall KYOTO (2010), Harborland and Janbo Square Kawachinagano plus the Takatsuki DC (2011), Cainz Mall Hikone and Nishinomiya Imazu (2012), Kawanishi (2013), and Hakata plus the Okawa DC and the Manabe Net Shop online store (2014). In 2014 the company also withdrew from the Livins voluntary chain. In 2015 the AEON Mall Shijonawate and Kusatsu stores opened. In 2016 the Kakogawa Nikke Park Town and Janbo Square Kawachinagano stores closed, and the Kamio-PAPA store opened in Saitama — the company's first store in the Kanto region. The Yawata and Tochigi Ohira stores opened in 2017; the Sakai-Senboku and Yao Gaikanyo stores opened in 2018, while the Cainz Mall Hikone store closed. The AEON Town Fujimino store opened in 2020 and the AEON Mall Kawaguchi store in 2021. In 2022 the Kyoto Kisshoin and Sakai Mihara stores opened, the Kamio-PAPA store closed, the Gunma Chiyoda store opened, and the company listed on the TOKYO PRO Market on December 6. In 2023 the Yawata and AEON Mall KYOTO stores closed; Moritoshi Manabe became Representative Director and Chairman and Toru Tsukada became Representative Director and President. In 2024 the AEON Town Fujimino store closed, and the Abeno and store and Lalaport Numazu store opened. In 2025 the AEON Mall Shijonawate store closed on January 14, the company was delisted from the TOKYO PRO Market on January 29, and the Abeno and store closed on August 3.
