Mapfre in the USA serves policyholders in 11 states and offers a full range of personal lines and commercial lines insurance products including coverage for automobiles, homes, and umbrella. Mapfre Insurance protects more Massachusetts homes and autos than any other carrier in the country, and is described as the 21st largest private passenger auto insurer and the 23rd largest personal lines carrier in the United States. Its US history includes expansion through acquisitions beginning with Western Pioneer Insurance Company in California, later renamed Commerce West in 1995, and the 2008 acquisition of Massachusetts-based The Commerce Group Inc. (the Commerce Insurance Company), which was founded in Webster in 1972 and remains headquartered there.

Mapfre began to expand in the United States with the purchase of Western Pioneer Insurance Company in California, which was later renamed Commerce West in 1995. Four years later, Mapfre acquired the Automobile Club Insurance Company out of Columbus, Ohio, in a joint venture with AAA. After expanding its coverage into other states, the company was rebranded to the American Commerce Insurance Company. The company expanded into New Hampshire in 2001 and then into New York in 2007 by purchasing SWICO Enterprises. In 2008, Mapfre acquired Massachusetts-based The Commerce Group Inc., better known as the Commerce Insurance Company, which was founded in Webster in 1972. The company, which is still headquartered there today, was renamed Mapfre Insurance Corp. in 2026 and since then, all the companies have been rebranded as Mapfre Insurance. In 2021, Century Automotive Service Corporation was acquired by Mapfre Insurance.
