Overview

Mars Whisky is the whisky brand of Hombo Shuzo Co., Ltd., a Japanese beverage producer whose official site lists whisky among its core categories alongside shochu, wine, liqueurs and spirits. The brand's whisky is associated with the Mars Komagatake Distillery in Nagano Prefecture and the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima Prefecture, both listed among the company's manufacturing sites. Hombo Shuzo's history records that whisky production began in 1949, and that a whisky production licence was transferred from the Yamanashi plant to the Shinshu plant in 1985, when the Shinshu plant (now Mars Komagatake Distillery) was newly established.

History

Hombo Shuzo's official history records that the company began whisky production in 1949. In 1957 the whisky production licence was transferred from the Tsunuki plant to the Kagoshima plant, and in 1960 a Yamanashi plant (now Mars Yamanashi Winery) was newly established, where a distillation facility designed by Kiichiro Iwai was installed and malt spirit production began. In 1969 the Kagoshima plant newly re-acquired a whisky production licence, and in 1972 whisky distillation at the Yamanashi plant was suspended. In 1985 the whisky production licence was transferred from the Yamanashi plant to the Shinshu plant, and the Shinshu plant (now Mars Komagatake Distillery) was newly established in Miyada Village, Kamiina District, Nagano Prefecture. In 1992 whisky distillation at the Shinshu plant was suspended. The company's current site lists the Mars Komagatake Distillery in Nagano Prefecture and the Mars Tsunuki Distillery in Kagoshima Prefecture among its whisky-related manufacturing and experience sites.
