Overview

Matterport is an American spatial-mapping and digital-twin technology company headquartered in Sunnyvale, California. Its platform converts physical interiors and other built environments into navigable three-dimensional models that can be viewed, measured, annotated, shared, and incorporated into property and facility workflows. The company serves real-estate brokerages, property managers, construction firms, architects, insurers, retailers, hospitality businesses, and other organizations that need a persistent digital representation of a physical site. Matterport began in 2011 as a private startup founded by Matthew Bell, David Gausebeck, and Michael Beebe. Bell and Gausebeck developed an early room-scanning prototype using PrimeSense camera technology, while Beebe contributed experience in 3D modeling and medical-device design. The company joined Y Combinator in 2012 and initially focused on making high-quality 3D capture faster and less expensive than conventional specialist workflows. Early funding supported development of dedicated cameras and relationships with real-estate and videogame businesses. The company introduced its first commercial camera, the Pro 3D, in 2014. It paired capture hardware with a subscription cloud service and a browser-based player, establishing the hardware-plus-software model that remained central to the brand. Matterport subsequently expanded the product family with the Pro2 in 2017, the lower-cost Pro2 Lite in 2018, and the LiDAR-equipped Pro3 in 2022. Its software also evolved beyond camera ownership: Cloud 3.0 and the Cortex artificial-intelligence processing system enabled users to create models with supported third-party 360-degree cameras, including products from Insta360 and Ricoh. Matterport broadened its platform through floor-plan generation, measurement and annotation tools, developer capabilities, application programming interfaces, and services for property marketing and management. Its digital twins are used to support remote property tours, documentation of existing conditions, construction progress reviews, insurance inspection, facilities planning, and research into robotics and embodied artificial intelligence. Partnerships with Google, Redfin, Facebook AI Research, and Amazon Web Services helped extend the technology into augmented reality, real-estate listings, academic datasets, and industrial digital-twin infrastructure. R.J. Pittman became chief executive officer in 2018, succeeding Bill Brown. In 2021, Matterport merged with Gores Holdings VI, a special-purpose acquisition company, and began trading on Nasdaq under MTTR. The company later acquired Enview, an artificial-intelligence company focused on 3D spatial data, and VHT Studios, a real-estate marketing agency. It undertook workforce reductions in response to cost pressures, including a 2020 pandemic-era reduction and a larger restructuring in 2023. CoStar Group announced an agreement to acquire Matterport in 2024 in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The acquisition closed on February 28, 2025, ending Matterport's period as an independently traded public company. Matterport continues as a CoStar Group subsidiary, with its brand and spatial-data platform positioned as an extension of CoStar's real-estate technology ecosystem.

History

Matterport was established in 2011 by Matthew Bell, David Gausebeck, and Michael Beebe. Bell and Gausebeck had developed an early prototype for capturing three-dimensional imagery inside rooms using PrimeSense camera-on-a-chip technology. Beebe was recruited for expertise in 3D modeling and medical-device design. The startup joined Y Combinator in early 2012, using the accelerator period to refine its capture technology and commercial proposition. During 2012 and 2013, Matterport sought to make indoor 3D mapping more accessible than traditional specialist scanning. It pursued relationships with real-estate businesses and videogame developers and raised seed and early institutional funding to develop a commercial product. In November 2013, Bill Brown became chief executive officer, guiding the company through its first product launch and early expansion. Matterport released the Pro 3D camera on March 13, 2014. The camera was sold as part of a broader system that included subscription cloud processing and a browser-based player. The initial target customers included contractors, architects, and real-estate organizations. Later in 2014, Matterport won Realogy's FWD Innovation Summit and raised a Series B round intended in part to extend its 3D-mapping technology to mobile devices. In 2015, it raised a Series C round and increasingly emphasized software, virtual-reality image stitching, mobile capture, and a developer platform rather than relying exclusively on proprietary camera sales. The product range expanded with the Pro2 in June 2017 and the less expensive Pro2 Lite in February 2018. Matterport also developed software capable of generating floor plans from captured imagery. In December 2018, R.J. Pittman, previously chief product officer at eBay, became chief executive officer. Brown remained associated with the company as a board adviser. Under Pittman, Matterport introduced Cloud 3.0 in January 2019. The service used Cortex, an artificial-intelligence image-processing system, and supported selected third-party 360-degree cameras from manufacturers such as Insta360 and Ricoh. This broadened access to the platform and reduced dependence on Matterport-branded hardware. The COVID-19 pandemic created operational and commercial pressure, and Matterport reduced its workforce by approximately 90 employees in April 2020. In February 2021, the company announced an agreement to merge with Gores Holdings VI, a special-purpose acquisition company. The transaction was valued at approximately $2.9 billion and closed on July 23, 2021, when Matterport began trading on Nasdaq under MTTR. The public-company transition was followed by a legal dispute with former CEO Bill Brown over a bylaw that restricted his ability to trade shares after the merger; a court ruled in Brown's favor in January 2022. Matterport continued expanding through acquisitions and partnerships. It completed the acquisition of Enview in January 2022, adding artificial-intelligence capabilities for 3D spatial data, and acquired VHT Studios in July 2022 to strengthen real-estate marketing services. In August 2022, it launched the Pro3 camera with LiDAR sensing. Matterport also collaborated with Google on Project Tango, with Redfin on 3D real-estate walkthroughs, with Facebook AI Research on the Habitat-Matterport 3D Dataset, and with Amazon Web Services in connection with AWS IoT TwinMaker. In July 2023, Matterport announced a restructuring that eliminated approximately 170 positions. In September of the same year, investors filed litigation alleging insider self-dealing. In April 2024, CoStar Group announced an agreement to acquire Matterport in a cash-and-stock transaction valued at approximately $1.6 billion. The transaction closed on February 28, 2025. Matterport therefore ceased to be an independent Nasdaq-listed company and became an operating subsidiary within CoStar Group, while continuing to develop and market its spatial-capture and digital-twin products.
