Overview

MAWERA (Mawera GmbH) is an Austrian manufacturer of heating technology based in Hard, Vorarlberg. The company was founded in 1975 as a family business and specialises in biomass and solid-fuel heating systems with an output of up to 13,000 kW. Its product range covers automatic wood heating systems, biomass district heating plants, combined heat and power (CHP) solutions and combined heat, power and cooling (CCHP) systems, serving residential, commercial, industrial and municipal customers. MAWERA built a reputation for technical firsts in the biomass heating sector. In 1979 it produced what it describes as the world's first microprocessor-controlled automatic wood heating system. In 2000 it realised the first combined heat, power and cooling plant based on waste wood, and in 2001 the first CHP plant based on a Stirling engine. The company has received multiple innovation awards, including the Bavarian State Prize (1981 and 1988) and the Innovation Prize of the State of Vorarlberg (1989, 1998 and 2004). In 2006 MAWERA was acquired by the German heating technology group Viessmann. From January 2015 the company and its brand operated under the Viessmann name, and its products were marketed as part of the Viessmann portfolio of solid-fuel boilers. Since 2021 MAWERA has again operated as an independent brand. Alongside the MAWERA brand, the company also services the Köb, Weiss, Müller and Bioflamm brands. MAWERA maintains sales and service operations in Austria (headquarters), Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Poland. Its Austrian and Italian operations focus on MAWERA and Köb; Switzerland covers MAWERA, Köb and Müller; Germany covers MAWERA, Köb, Weiss and Bioflamm; and Poland covers MAWERA and Köb. The company's largest single order was a 17.2 MW total heating capacity project in Sterzing (Vipiteno), Italy, in 2004.

History

MAWERA was founded in 1975 as a family business. In 1976 it established a sales and service branch in Wels, Upper Austria. In 1979 the company built a new operating and office building for 15 employees and produced what it describes as the world's first microprocessor-controlled automatic wood heating system. In 1980 Mawera Kessel & Maschinen GmbH was founded in Lindau, West Germany. The company received the Bavarian State Prize for the first time in 1981 and the Austria Quality Seal in 1985, the first in its industry to do so. A second Bavarian State Prize followed in 1988, and in 1989 the State of Vorarlberg awarded the company its Innovation Prize for the first time. In 1990 a branch was established in Zwickau, Saxony, to open up new markets in Eastern Europe. In 1991 MAWERA built Italy's largest biomass district heating plant at that time, with a capacity of 2 × 4 MW, in Olang. In 1993 sales markets were extended to the United Kingdom and Ireland, and in 1996 Mawera Italia s.r.l. was founded in Bolzano. The company received the Innovation Prize of the State of Vorarlberg for the second time in 1998. In 2000 it realised the first combined heat, power and cooling plant based on waste wood, and in 2001 the first combined heat and power plant based on a Stirling engine. In 2002 the company was a regional winner of the AdI (Arbeitsplätze durch Innovation) award and employed 120 people. It received the Vorarlberg Innovation Prize for the third time in 2004. Also in 2004, MAWERA executed the largest order in its history, a project with a total heating capacity of 17.2 MW in Sterzing, Italy. Further capacity expansion led to a 50% increase in revenue in 2005. In 2006 MAWERA was acquired by Viessmann. From January 2015 the company and its brand were renamed Viessmann, and its products were marketed under the Viessmann brand. Since 2021 MAWERA has again been an independent brand. In addition to the MAWERA brand, the company also services the Köb, Weiss, Müller and Bioflamm brands. MAWERA maintains sales and service operations in Austria (headquarters), Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Poland, covering different brand portfolios in each market.
