Overview

MDF.1, formally known as MDF.1 – Lokales Fernsehen Magdeburg GmbH and branded as "Magdeburger Fernsehen 1," is a private commercial regional television broadcaster based in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It focuses on the Magdeburg metropolitan area and produces daily programming covering politics, culture, business, human-interest stories, sport, and weather. The station launched on 1 December 1997 from the IGZ Barleben business incubator, and it received its regular-operation broadcasting license from the Landesmedienanstalt Sachsen-Anhalt on 28 November 2001. The station's history includes a period of financial difficulty. In October 2007, MDF.1 Lokales Fernsehen Magdeburg GmbH filed for insolvency and ceased broadcasting on 31 December 2007. From 1 January 2008, the programming has been produced and operated by the new license holder, Stefan Richter Audio & Videoservice. The original headquarters on Georg-Kaiser-Straße 3 in Magdeburg, which had housed around 25 permanent and 15 freelance staff across roughly 2,500 square meters, was abandoned due to the insolvency; the new base is in Welsleben. MDF.1 operates three playout servers with the main cable network operators in Magdeburg and Schönebeck, reaching approximately 130,000 households in those cable networks. Its programming is also available as a video-on-demand offering on its own website and can be accessed on mobile via the DAILY ME service. On 1 September 2021, the station introduced a new on-air design and a modified logo. As a local broadcaster, MDF.1 occupies a niche in the German media landscape, providing hyperlocal news and cultural coverage that larger national networks do not serve. Its content includes reports on local events, civic affairs, and community topics, as reflected in its homepage headlines covering street music, flea markets, flash mobs, art exhibitions, and local sports. The station remains a privately held operation under the ownership of Stefan Richter Audio & Videoservice.

Its license for regular operation was granted on 28 November 2001 by the Landesmedienanstalt Sachsen-Anhalt (the state media authority). At the end of 2006, the station was significantly involved in the Heendorf affair surrounding Magdeburg CDU city councilor Michael Heendorf. The resulting complaints from the Lord Mayor of Magdeburg to the Medienanstalt Sachsen-Anhalt (MSA) were all rejected, as the station had merely fulfilled its duty to report. In October 2007, "MDF.1 Lokales Fernsehen Magdeburg GmbH" filed for insolvency and ceased broadcasting as of 31 December 2007.
