Overview

Meditsina (Russian: «Медицина») is a Soviet and Russian state book publishing house specializing in literature across all branches of medicine and public health. It was founded in Moscow in November 1918 as the publishing section of the People's Commissariat for Health (Narkomzdrav) of the RSFSR. From 1928 it operated as the State Medical Publishing House (Gosmedizdat, Medgiz) of the RSFSR Narkomzdrav; from 1931 Medgiz was part of the OGIZ system, and from 1937 it was the Medgiz publishing house of the USSR Narkomzdrav. In 1963 it was renamed the Meditsina publishing house. The publisher was assigned code 039 by the USSR State Committee for Publishing (Goskomizdat). Within the Goskomizdat system in the 1980s, the house belonged to the main editorial board for scientific and technical literature. As of 2009, the publishing house issued between 100 and 150 academic and educational titles annually — monographs, medical atlases, textbooks, reference works, and manuals. In addition, Meditsina is the founder and publisher of 40 specialized medical journals. Its director from 1992 to 2013 was Andrey Mikhaylovich Stochik, Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, and academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. The house remains a state-owned publisher and maintains an official website at medlit.ru.
