Overview
MEIZU is a Chinese technology brand headquartered in Zhuhai. Founded in 2003 by Huang Zhang, the business first became known for portable digital-media products, particularly MP3 and MP4 players, before entering smartphones and building a distinctive software layer around its devices. Its early media players, including the M6 Mini Player, established a reputation for compact industrial design and user-focused interfaces. The company announced its first smartphone, the M8, in 2007 and subsequently became a recognizable participant in China’s rapidly expanding smartphone market. The M8 used a Windows CE-based platform and drew controversy from Apple over similarities to the iPhone and alleged intellectual-property infringement. Meizu’s more durable smartphone strategy began with the M9, launched in 2011 as its first Android-based phone. The company then developed the MX range and introduced Flyme, a customized Android interface that became one of its most important brand assets. Flyme emphasized a flat visual language, redesigned applications, cloud services, one-handed operation, performance tuning and the mBack interaction system, which combined tapping and pressing a physical button for navigation. Flyme’s design and interaction model helped distinguish Meizu from larger Android manufacturers. During the 2010s, Meizu maintained several smartphone families. The MX line served as a technology and design flagship; the lower-priced M series targeted buyers seeking relatively strong specifications at accessible prices; and the PRO series presented higher-end hardware and materials. The company also experimented with different processors and software platforms, including MediaTek, Samsung Exynos, Alibaba’s Yun OS in the Chinese market and an Ubuntu Touch edition of the PRO 5. Its portfolio expanded internationally through offices, distributors and online retail, with notable activity in Hong Kong, Russia, India, France, Italy, Eastern Europe and other markets. Meizu’s smartphone business later faced a more difficult competitive environment as Chinese manufacturers expanded their product ranges, distribution and marketing. The company continued releasing models such as the Meizu 15, Meizu 16s, Meizu 17, Meizu 18, Meizu 20 and Meizu 21 families, while maintaining Flyme as the principal software identity. Flyme’s development progressed from Android-based releases to AI-oriented functionality. In 2024, the company described a move toward an “All in AI” strategy, indicating that traditional smartphone development would no longer be its sole center of gravity. A major structural change occurred in 2022, when a Geely-affiliated entity acquired 79.09% of Meizu Technology and control transferred into the Geely system. In 2023, the organizations completed a merger and formed DreamSmart Meizu Group, with Shen Ziyu serving as chairman and chief executive. Under this structure, the brand’s scope broadened beyond phones to include smart-car technology, the Flyme Auto cockpit operating system, augmented-reality devices and other consumer electronics. Flyme Auto extends the software ecosystem into vehicle infotainment and supports Geely’s broader intelligent-vehicle strategy. Meizu also announced the DreamCar MX project and later presented a more expansive AI and smart-ecosystem direction. The brand therefore remains active, but its strategic identity has shifted from an independent smartphone specialist toward a Geely-linked platform for connected devices, automotive software and intelligent hardware.
History
Huang Zhang founded Meizu in Zhuhai in 2003. The company initially made MP3 players and entered MP4 players in 2006. Its M6 Mini Player became one of its best-known early products and was sold outside China under the Dane-Elec name. This first phase established Meizu as a design-conscious portable-media manufacturer before the company moved into mobile phones. Meizu announced the M8 smartphone in January 2007 and released it in April. The device used Mymobile, a platform based on Microsoft Windows CE 6.0. Its design drew comparisons with Apple’s iPhone and led to an Apple lawsuit concerning alleged intellectual-property theft. Meizu later released the M8SE in 2009. In January 2011, the company launched the M9, its first Android smartphone. The phone performed strongly in China and gave Meizu a foundation for a longer-term Android strategy. The company began international expansion in 2011 by opening offices in Hong Kong and Russia. The MX, released in January 2012, was the first phone to use Flyme OS and the first Meizu smartphone officially released outside mainland China. Flyme became a defining part of the brand. Its successive versions introduced redesigned applications, cloud functionality, flat visual design, performance improvements, support for one-handed use and the mBack navigation system. Flyme 4 was also made available for selected non-Meizu phones, although community ports extended the software to additional hardware. Meizu broadened its smartphone range through the MX2, MX3 and MX4. The MX3 was notable for offering a 128 GB internal-storage configuration. The MX4 added LTE and became the first Meizu phone using a MediaTek processor; selected mainland-market versions also offered Alibaba’s Yun OS alongside Flyme. The MX4 Pro used a Samsung Exynos processor and a high-resolution display. In late 2014, Meizu introduced the M series, which focused on delivering competitive specifications at lower prices. The M1 Note, M1, M2 Note and M2 became important products in this value-oriented segment. The MX5, introduced in 2015, was accompanied by Meizu’s first power bank and virtual-reality headset. That year the company introduced the PRO family with the PRO 5, a premium-oriented model. A later Ubuntu Edition of the PRO 5 demonstrated Meizu’s willingness to experiment with alternative mobile operating systems. The PRO 6 followed in 2016, while the M3 family and MX6 expanded the company’s mainstream range. Meizu also entered India in 2015, selling models through Amazon, Flipkart and later other channels. The M2, M2 Note and M3 Note were among its better-known Indian products, but the company later withdrew after weak sales before making a subsequent limited return with models including the C9, M6T and Meizu 16. The brand continued its numbered smartphone lines with the Meizu 15 series in 2018, the Meizu 16s in 2019 and the Meizu 17 in 2020. The 17 used Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 platform, LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 storage. Flyme continued to evolve, reaching Flyme 8 with the Meizu 16s Pro and Flyme 9 with the Meizu 18 series. Later releases connected Flyme more closely with AI functions and broader device interoperability. The most consequential corporate transition came in 2022. A Geely-affiliated entity acquired 79.09% of Meizu Technology, making the Geely system the actual controller. In December of that year, the founding shareholders, including Huang Zhang, withdrew from the company’s ownership structure, while a Geely-controlled entity became the sole shareholder according to the cited reference material. In March 2023, the organizational merger of DreamSmart and Meizu Technology created DreamSmart Meizu Group. Shen Ziyu became chairman and chief executive, and Meizu moved from independent operation toward serving as part of Geely’s intelligent-technology ecosystem. The post-acquisition business expanded into automotive software and connected hardware. Flyme Auto, derived from the mobile Flyme experience, was developed as an intelligent cockpit system for Geely-related vehicles. Meizu also announced the DreamCar MX initiative in 2023, combining vehicle development with a user co-creation program. In February 2024, the company announced a strategic move toward an AI-centered model over the following three years. This direction broadened the role of Flyme toward AI-enabled phones, vehicle infotainment, AR devices and other intelligent terminals. Meizu’s history consequently represents a transition from portable-media maker, to smartphone and software specialist, to a Geely-linked intelligent-ecosystem brand.
