Overview
metall – Dein Magazin (short: metall; formerly known as metallzeitung) is the member magazine of IG Metall, the German metalworkers' trade union and, by its own account, the world's largest single trade union. The magazine is published twelve times a year and is distributed free of charge to every IG Metall member. It presents itself as the world's largest trade union magazine and ranks among the highest-circulation magazines in Germany. The publication is issued by IG Metall and produced under the editorial responsibility of a chief editor; the imprint lists the union's leadership as publishers. Its editorial content covers union news, labour and workplace topics, social policy, and member life, structured into recurring sections such as "Aktuell", "Leben", "Arbeit" and "Chancen". Each issue consists of a nationwide section of 32 pages plus seven region-specific pages, allowing local and regional IG Metall offices to address their own members. The magazine is available in print, as an e-paper, and as a barrier-free PDF, and it is printed by alpha print medien AG in Frankfurt. The title's lineage reaches back to predecessor publications from 1883; from 1949 to 2007 it appeared as Metall, then as metallzeitung until 2021, when it returned to the name metall. Beyond its service function for members, the magazine has a place in German journalism history: Günter Wallraff published some of his first critical industrial reports in its pages. Today metall functions as both a membership benefit and a communication channel for one of Europe's most influential labour organizations.
History
The history of metall reaches back to predecessor publications from 1883, when the German labour movement began producing its own press. A standard reference work, Gerhard Beier's "100 Jahre im Wort. Die Metall-Zeitung 1883–1983", documents this century-long lineage. After the Second World War, the newly founded IG Metall (established in 1949) made the magazine its central member publication. From 1949 to 2007 the title appeared as Metall and was published fortnightly. During this period it became a notable outlet for critical industrial journalism: the young Günter Wallraff published some of his first investigative reports in Metall, including his well-known work on the Ford factory, which helped establish his reputation. In 2007 the magazine was renamed metallzeitung, a title it carried until 2021. In 2021 it returned to the shorter name metall, now styled "metall – Dein Magazin". The magazine is printed by alpha print medien AG in Frankfurt. Over the decades it has grown into what it describes as the world's largest trade union magazine, with a circulation placing it among Germany's highest-circulation periodicals. It is published twelve times a year, with a nationwide section and regional pages, and is distributed free to all IG Metall members. The editorial team is led by chief editor Mirko Kaiser, while the imprint lists IG Metall's chair Jörg Hofmann, second chair Christiane Benner, and chief treasurer Jürgen Kerner as publishers. The magazine continues to serve as a key communication instrument of IG Metall, covering union campaigns, collective bargaining, workplace issues, and social policy.
