Overview

Metropol Kino is a cinema in Chemnitz, Germany. It operates in a building whose history dates to the construction of the Chemnitzer METROPOL-Theater in 1912–1913, designed by architect Wenzel Bürger as a varieté theatre, hotel and restaurant complex. The cinema is a member of AG Kino – Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater and shows a programme of films and live events.

History

The building housing Metropol Kino was constructed in 1912–1913 as the Chemnitzer METROPOL-Theater, designed by Chemnitz architect Wenzel Bürger. It was built as a varieté theatre, hotel and restaurant operation at a cost of one million marks, opposite the Central-Theater. The complex included a four-storey main building with a steep mansard roof and a large hall with two tiers seating 600 people. The architecture combined historicist elements (Baroque, Classicism) and Jugendstil. The interior featured a marble-walled vestibule with columns and mosaics, a reception hall with chandeliers, bronze reliefs and stair balustrades. The cinema today is a member of AG Kino – Gilde deutscher Filmkunsttheater.
