Overview
Microsoft Power Platform is a collection of low-code development tools developed by Microsoft that allows users to build custom business applications, automate workflows, and analyze data. It is designed to be accessible to users with varying levels of technical expertise, enabling organizations to create custom solutions and streamline processes. The platform integrates with GitHub, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Dynamics 365, Microsoft Teams, and other Microsoft and third-party applications. The Power Platform family includes Power BI for business analytics and data visualization, Power Apps for low-code custom business applications, Power Automate (formerly Microsoft Flow) for business process automation, Copilot Studio (formerly Power Virtual Agents) for building AI-powered chatbots and copilot experiences, and Power Pages for low-code websites. Microsoft also developed the Power Fx low-code programming language to express logic across the platform. A foundational component is Microsoft Dataverse, a cloud-based data management service that serves as the data storage and management engine for Power Platform, Office 365, and Dynamics 365 apps. Dataverse decouples data from applications, supports relational and semi-structured data, and includes security features such as row-level and column-level security managed through Microsoft Entra ID. Microsoft Power Platform competes in the low-code application development, business intelligence, and workflow automation markets, with Power BI competing against tools like Tableau, Spotfire, and QlikView. The platform is part of Microsoft's broader cloud and business applications ecosystem and is sold as a subscription service.
History
Microsoft Power Platform emerged as an umbrella brand for Microsoft's low-code and business application tools. The components have distinct origins: Power BI was introduced as a business analytics service; Power Apps and Microsoft Flow (later renamed Power Automate) were launched to enable low-code app creation and workflow automation. Power Virtual Agents (later renamed Copilot Studio) added chatbot development capabilities. In 2020, Microsoft renamed Common Data Service to Microsoft Dataverse, providing a unified data platform for Power Platform, Office 365, and Dynamics 365. Power Pages was spun out from Power Apps Portals in 2022 as a standalone product for low-code websites. Microsoft also developed Power Fx, a low-code programming language, to unify logic expression across the platform. The platform has been positioned as part of Microsoft's Power Platform and Dynamics 365 ecosystem, integrating with Azure, Teams, and GitHub.
