Overview

Millarworld is a comic-book imprint founded by Scottish writer Mark Millar in 2003. It was established as a creator-owned publishing line, allowing Millar and collaborating artists to develop original characters and stories outside the traditional superhero universes controlled by publishers such as Marvel and DC. The imprint's fictional setting, often called the Millarworld or Millarverse, connects or thematically groups a large body of creator-owned properties, although the degree of continuity varies between titles. Prominent characters and concepts associated with the line include Wesley Gibson from Wanted, Dave Lizewski and Hit-Girl from Kick-Ass, Eggsy Unwin from Kingsman, Matthew Anderson from Nemesis, the family of Jupiter's Legacy, the protagonists of Supercrooks, and characters from The Magic Order, American Jesus, Huck, Empress, Prodigy, Night Club, The Ambassadors, and other series. The imprint began with Wanted, a miniseries published through Top Cow Productions. Millarworld subsequently expanded through a mixture of limited series, ongoing projects, sequels, spin-offs, reprints, and crossover events. Its best-known properties are generally built around high-concept premises that can support both comic storytelling and screen adaptation: Wanted reimagines supervillain culture, Kick-Ass focuses on an ordinary teenager attempting to become a masked vigilante, Kingsman presents a stylized espionage world, and Jupiter's Legacy explores the social and political consequences of superhero power across generations. The line has also included fantasy, science fiction, crime, horror, and action properties. Millarworld's commercial identity has been closely tied to adaptation and licensing. Wanted was loosely adapted into a feature film released by Universal Pictures in 2008, while Kick-Ass became a 2010 feature film directed by Matthew Vaughn and later received a sequel. Other properties, including Chosen, War Heroes, and several later titles, were optioned or developed for film and television. Millar has described a practice of sharing half of adaptation-related proceeds with the artist who illustrated the relevant creator-owned work, reflecting the imprint's emphasis on collaboration and ownership. Netflix acquired Millarworld on 7 August 2017. The transaction gave Netflix access to a substantial portfolio of comic properties and positioned Millarworld as a source of original projects for the streaming company's film, television, and animation operations. The first comic series published after the acquisition was The Magic Order, whose first issue appeared in June 2018. Netflix subsequently announced development of projects based on Empress, Huck, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, Jupiter's Legacy, American Jesus, and other properties. The Chosen One, based on American Jesus, became a live-action series, while Super Crooks was developed as an anime series produced by Bones. Jupiter's Legacy was also adapted as a live-action series, though the show was cancelled after its first season. In the 2020s, Millarworld continued to publish new material and plan interconnected events. Announced projects included Night Club, Nemesis: Reloaded, The Magic Order 4, and The Ambassadors. These titles fed into Big Game, a crossover event illustrated by Pepe Larraz and later described as a sequel to Wanted involving Wesley Gibson, the Fraternity, Nemesis, and characters associated with Kick-Ass. In December 2023, Millar announced a publishing arrangement with Dark Horse Comics covering reprints and new Millarworld material, including five new series planned for 2024 and Nemesis: Rogues' Gallery. Millarworld therefore functions both as a publishing imprint and as an adaptable intellectual-property library whose value lies in recurring characters, creator ownership, cross-media rights, and a recognizable high-concept action style.

History

Millarworld was launched in 2003 by Scottish comic-book writer Mark Millar as a creator-owned imprint. Its founding model separated the line from publisher-owned superhero franchises: Millar and the artists involved retained ownership of original characters and concepts, while outside publishers could handle publication and distribution. Wanted was the first major Millarworld project and established the imprint's preference for concise, commercially legible premises, extreme genre combinations, and characters capable of moving between comics and screen entertainment. The line expanded through projects such as Kick-Ass, Kingsman, War Heroes, Nemesis, Jupiter's Legacy, Supercrooks, American Jesus, Huck, Empress, and The Magic Order. Although many series were written by Millar, the imprint also involved a succession of prominent artists and, in later volumes of properties such as Kingsman, Kick-Ass – The New Girl, and Hit-Girl, writers other than Millar. The books were published through different publishing partners rather than a single permanent distribution channel. This arrangement allowed Millarworld to operate primarily as an intellectual-property and creative imprint rather than as a conventional standalone comics publisher. Adaptation became a central part of the imprint's history. Wanted was loosely adapted into a feature film released by Universal Pictures in 2008. Kick-Ass, illustrated by John Romita Jr. and published by Marvel, was adapted into a 2010 film directed by Matthew Vaughn. Chosen was optioned by Sony Pictures, and War Heroes was reported as being optioned by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2008, with Michael De Luca attached as producer and Millar as an executive producer. These deals reinforced the idea that Millarworld properties could be designed as both comics and broader entertainment franchises. In October 2014, after delays affecting Jupiter's Legacy #5, Millar said that future Millarworld series would be completed in full before their debut issues were released. The intended purpose was to protect publishing regularity and avoid delays during serialization. The policy reflected the increasing importance of schedule reliability as the imprint expanded its publication program and developed adaptation plans. Netflix acquired Millarworld on 7 August 2017. The acquisition was strategically significant because it gave Netflix a pipeline of creator-owned comic properties at a time when streaming companies were expanding their original film, television, and animation libraries. The first Millarworld comic released after the acquisition was The Magic Order, whose debut issue appeared on 13 June 2018. In July 2018, Netflix announced a development slate involving Empress, Huck, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, Jupiter's Legacy, and American Jesus. Millar later reported that Jupiter's Legacy was planned as the first announced television project, with Steven S. DeKnight initially associated with showrunning before leaving and being replaced by Sang Kyu Kim. American Jesus was developed as The Chosen One, with Everardo Gout and Leopoldo Gout associated with the production. Feature development also continued for Empress, Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, and Huck, although Huck was later reconsidered as a television project. Netflix announced a Super Crooks anime in March 2019, produced by Bones. The adaptation strategy was broader than direct screen versions: Netflix also planned comic tie-ins for selected properties, beginning with Prodigy, and Millar agreed to develop new Millarworld properties exclusively for Netflix. Development priorities changed over time. By late 2022, updates indicated that Huck was being redeveloped as a television series and that a live-action Supercrooks project was expected to follow Jupiter's Legacy. Jupiter's Legacy itself was cancelled after its first season, illustrating the uncertainty of long-running adaptation plans even within a major streaming relationship. Millarworld's publishing activity continued alongside screen development. In 2022, Millar announced four new series—Night Club, Nemesis: Reloaded, The Magic Order 4, and The Ambassadors—that would build toward Big Game. Big Game was illustrated by Pepe Larraz and was later revealed to be a sequel to Wanted. Its premise brought Wesley Gibson and the Fraternity together with Matthew Anderson, the character known as Nemesis, against a new wave of superheroes connected to the wider Millarworld setting and the legacy of Kick-Ass. In December 2023, Millar announced that Dark Horse Comics would become the new publisher of Millarworld titles. The arrangement covered reprints of earlier works and new series, with five new series planned for 2024, including Nemesis: Rogues' Gallery with artist Valerio Giangiordano. Millarworld consequently remains a hybrid brand: it is a creator-led comics imprint, a connected portfolio of entertainment properties, and a licensing and adaptation platform operating under Netflix ownership while using external publishing partners for portions of its print output.
