Overview

Misaki Donuts (ミサキドーナツ) is a Japanese handmade doughnut specialty brand operated by Sweet Spuest Co., Ltd. It was founded on December 8, 2012, in Misaki, a port town at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture. The brand grew out of a community conversation around creating a new local specialty beyond the town's famous tuna, and it chose doughnuts as a product that could be enjoyed by children and elderly residents alike without competing directly with existing local bakeries or confectioners. The first store, Misaki Honten, opened on Misaki Ginza-dori shopping street in a renovated former watch shop, the Fushimi Clock Shop, estimated to be 70–80 years old. The ground floor became the sales area and workshop, while the second-floor living space was converted into seating. The brand's doughnuts are characterized by handmade shaping, soy-milk-based dough, and a two-stage fermentation process that produces a fluffy, moist, and light texture. Ingredients such as cream are wrapped inside the dough before it is rolled and formed into rings. The product range has expanded from about 10 items at founding to more than 20, including seasonal limited editions. Misaki Donuts operates stores mainly in Kanagawa Prefecture, with locations in Misaki, Zushi, Hayama, Minatomirai, Yokohama, Hoshikawa, Yokosuka Nagai, Chigasaki, Futakotamagawa, and Ofuna. In January 2026, it opened its ninth store, Futakotamagawa Rise, marking its first permanent store in Tokyo. The brand also sells nationwide through its official online shop, Rakuten market store, Amazon shop, and as a hometown tax return gift, and it appears at pop-up events in commercial facilities and department stores. Frozen doughnuts are shipped nationwide and can be naturally thawed at room temperature. The brand concept is "connecting people to people, town to town" through heartfelt doughnuts. Its commitment to handmade warmth extends to handwritten notes and messages for online and delivery customers. Misaki Honten also serves as a venue for music live events, talk events, and galleries, and the brand has released music through its own label, Misaki Donuts Records. In 2018, it received a Kanagawa Prefecture Governor and Prefectural Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry Chairman Award as an excellent retail store.

History

Misaki Donuts was founded on December 8, 2012, in Misaki, Miura City, Kanagawa Prefecture, a port town at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula. The area had long prospered as one of Japan's leading tuna landing bases, and its Showa-era shopping streets remain a backdrop for film shoots and tourism. The brand emerged from discussions among people who gathered at Misaki Presso, a cafe opened in 2010 on Misaki Ginza-dori shopping street by music producer Hiromitsu Fujisawa, who had moved to Misaki in 2004. As more shops in the shopping street closed, the group discussed creating a new local specialty beyond tuna and a store that could be used by everyone from children to elderly residents. They considered bakeries and Western confectioneries but chose a doughnut specialty shop to avoid competing with existing local businesses. The founding team included Fujisawa and Koji Nishimura. Fujisawa handled brand image formation. The first store, Misaki Honten, opened in a former long-established watch shop, Fushimi Clock Shop, estimated to be 70–80 years old. The building was renovated: the first floor became the sales area and workshop, and the second-floor residential space became customer seating. At the time, people reportedly said it was odd to open a doughnut shop there, since on weekdays the area around Misaki Port was said to have more cats than people walking around. The team started with a "let's give it a try" attitude, gradually attracting visitors who discovered the Misaki doughnut shop. By participating in town festivals and events and deepening communication with local residents, the shop began to catch the eyes of tourists as well. In 2013, after a event appearance at Saikaya Yokosuka store, the brand opened a tenant store there, and in October 2013 it opened the Zushi store. In 2014, it opened the Kamakura store, which also included workshop functions, and gradually became familiar as a town doughnut shop in the Shonan area. In November 2018, it received the Kanagawa Prefecture Governor and Prefectural Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry Chairman Award in the prefecture's excellent retail store commendation. In December 2018, it opened the Hayama store. By the 10th anniversary in 2022, it operated six stores in Miura City, Zushi City, Hayama Town, Kamakura City, and Yokohama City. In March 2021, in collaboration with JR Central, the brand developed "Shinkansen Doughnuts" designed after the 0 Series Shinkansen, Doctor Yellow, and the Tokaido Shinkansen with a blue stripe on a white base, sold exclusively on JR Central's EC site "Iimono Tanbo." In January 2026, it opened its ninth store, Futakotamagawa Rise, its first permanent store in Tokyo. That same month, it integrated the Zushi and Kamakura stores to expand production capacity, relocating to "Misaki Donuts & Cafe Zushi" with an attached workshop. The brand also sells through its official online shop, Rakuten market store, Amazon shop, and as a hometown tax return gift, and it appears at pop-up events in commercial facilities and department stores. Outside directly operated stores, Misaki Donuts is also sold at "Cafe Plaza dear KOREA" inside the complex "ChelSea Miura" in front of Miurakaigan Station. Misaki Honten's second floor is used not only as seating but also as a venue for music live events, talk events, and galleries. In 2025, it hosted "Rooted in Rhythm," an event series combining music and Misaki's local culture. In 2019, the brand's own music label, Misaki Donuts Records, released the Kamome Children's Choir album "Wonderful Music!" and has continued to release albums and singles by the choir. The choir's CDs are also sold at Misaki Donuts stores. Misaki Honten is a designated facility for Keikyu Electric Railway's "Misaki Maguro Ticket" "Miura/Misaki Omoide Ticket."
